Underwater

Postby sidd finch » Thu Nov 28, 2013 5:09 pm

Went out for a morning walk today and headed over to a local fish pond to test out the GoPro underwater. The fish were not too upset at the underwater invasion and the light was at the right place. For those in the USA this is Thanksgiving and I am thankful the fish did not mind.

That was so cool! The music was perfect. Especially liked the last half with the larger fish and the reflection above. :-5

Loved the clarity Sidd and the reflection of the big guy. Good fit on the music. What is the track?

The music track was appropriately enough called "underwater" from KillerTracks Atmospheric collection. I was really surprised at how clear the water was too. Looking at it from above it looked like it was really cloudy and not too clear.

Wow, thanks for posting that. Really cool! I'm impressed at the clarity of the footage. Your footage is very clear and the focus seems quite sharp. Did you use the "dive housing" or the included "waterproof housing"? I watched a "GoPro Tips and Tricks" YouTube video where both housings were compared and the quality of focus was quite different between them (dive housing was much better in his test).

How did you get the camera in the water? You weren't just sticking your arm in there were you? It's November and I bet that water was COLD!

I noticed a few instances of flickering, do you think that was caused by the GoPro?

The water was really cold.

I ended up mounting the camera to a monopod and used that extended to get it in the water. (Tip #1 don't forget to bring a dry towel to wipe the camera down after it comes out of the water). Otherwise, like me I had to wait till I got home to do more filming.

The camera is a GP3 Black and I used the housing that came with the camera which I think is just the waterproof housing. The reason for the color flicker (I think) is that I used Auto Color in Premier Pro and that seemed to cause that flicker. The footage was a bit greenish because of the water color without the effect. Without the effect there was no flicker in the raw footage.

What I liked the most is how the sun was sparkling through the water. I was not expecting the water to look as clear as it did.

Sidd,

What is the image of? Is this something you attached to the monopod in order to have more flexability with the camera view?

Ahhh I should have been clearer... It is a pole mount for the camera.

Ah! Eye See!

Looks like you're using a telescoping swimming pool handle. The ones for above ground pools at KMart - Walmart ought to be a lot more reasonably priced and water safe than some monopods. Good idea!

That gives me an idea, we have a telescoping painting handle around here somewhere. Wonder if it would be sturdy enough.

Very cool Sidd, the music was a bit eerie and I kept waiting for a shark to come out and eat all of the small fish.
Then I saw the carp, at least I think it was a carp, not a threat to the other fish at all. When the music is eerie like that I just think that something is going to happen, kind of "edge of your seat" music.

Cheryl, I bet your telescoping painting handle will work fine. After all the GoPro isn't heavy and it isn't like you will be pushing down on it (like you would when roller is attached).

I'm glad Paz mentioned the swimming pool handle, I totally missed that. I'll look for one of those so I won't have to get my monopod wet next summer.
