What still shot image size and resolution should I be using

Postby mikecox » Thu Apr 24, 2014 8:57 pm

Should I make all my images 2000x1500? If I am making HD video should I be using higher resolution images; or just 100ppi; or even 72?

For HD video the minimum you need is 1920 x 1080 pixels, a little larger if you want to pan/zoom around the image.

The ppi measure is irrelevant for video images and is used for printing. Kent Frost made a recent post on this point:-

I got that 2000x1500 from Steve's "Tricks... v11" book; pg 173. and he did indicate a ppi of 72. I''m still not quite sure I understand that; in light of hi res, Hi Def flat screens. I'm wondering why they wouldn't need a jpg image with a higher resolution?

Actually I was referring to jpg images, guess I should have said that /-:

Thanks for that. So, as I understand it, the resolution of a jpg image is irrelevant when added to a video project that will, of course, not go to paper.

But I still don't get it

High-def TVs are only 1920x1080, of course, Mike. So 2000x1500 pixels gives you plenty, without too much, resolution.

And, as John says, ppi is irrelevant for any images (jpeg, png, gif, etc) you plan to use in a video or online. So you can use 72, 92 or 100 ppi and you'll get the same results. For online/video use, all that matters is the picture's overall measurement, in pixels.

Thanks for the clarification Steve; now I can, truly, stop agonizing over this issue \:D/
