Organizer 12 can't find old catalogs

Postby Ron Hunter » Thu Nov 28, 2013 11:18 am

I have created a "Photo Catalog" and "Video Catalog" using PRE10. These catalogs are stored on my "media drive" so that when that drive is backed up, the catalogs are automatically backed up too. I keep shortcuts to these catalogs on my desktop.

I recently installed PRE12/PSE12. I thought it would be a good idea to convert my "version 10" catalogs to "version 12", so I opened Organizer 12 and selected "Manage Catalogs". I expected to find my "version 10" catalogs, but I didn't see them. The catalogs that were listed were NOT the ones I hoped to convert. The "Last Updated" and "Number of Items" of the displayed catalogs did not match the Version 10 catalogs I wanted to convert. I went into Windows Explorer and confirmed the Version 10 catalogs were where I thought they were. I used the Organizer 12 "Manage Catalogs > Custom Location > Browse" command and found the folder where the Version 10 catalogs were located, but the "catalog.psedb" file wasn't shown.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

That's a tough one, Ron. You should be able to use Manage Catalogs to locate and update any catalog file on your system.

What happens if you make a copy of your version 10 catalog and rename its suffix .pse12db?

Wow, that worked. When I copied the .pse10db file into a different folder, named it as .pse12db and double-clicked it, Organizer 12 opened and the catalog was displayed.

I thought I had to "convert" a catalog, but all I did was copy/paste/rename and things seem to be working. I'll poke around a bit more and advise how it goes.

Whoa!

That is a VERY--make that EXTREMELY--useful new tip, Steve.

Please make that one a stickey (or remind me how to do it).

Actually, it was kind of a shot in the dark. But I'm thrilled to hear that it actually works!

Even so, it's quite worthy of a stickie.

Penicillin, you may recall, was also discovered accidentally--and that was still good enough to win Fleming the Nobel Prize.

Of course, George. Let me figure out the exact wording and I'll post it to our "sticky" area.
