Scratch disks

Postby rigby3632 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 1:08 am

Virgin post - PREM 11 - Preferences, My media cache setting in scratch disks keeps defaulting to (custom) regardless to how many times I re-set it to (same as project).
Q1, Is this a fault with 11
Q2, How can I stop this happening
Q3, How do I free up space in my C drive ?

Computers being as fast and efficient as they are, I'm not sure there's an advantage to customizing the location of your scratch disks -- so I'm not sure it's worth struggling.

But if space on your hard drive(s) is at a premium it can lead to a number of other problems. How much free space is available on your hard drive?

I start to panic if I get down below 75 gigs. And (unless you've got a solid state drive) I still recommend defragmenting your free space once in a while to keep your scratch space from getting too fragmented.

:meet:
It may be better to just install a larger C drive if you need more space.

As Peru Bob says, you can simply replace your hard drive with a new one. A 1 TB drive costs less than $50. The only problem with doing so is that your Windows license is locked to your drive, so you'd have to contact Microsoft and buy a new Windows 10 license, which costs about $150. (Maybe the experts here at Muvipix know if there's a cheaper way to do this.)

On the other hand, you can buy a 1 TB drive and install it as a second drive in your existing computer -- which is pretty easy and takes about 15 minutes. (The connections are likely already in your computer.) You can then move all of your data, documents, photos and other media files to your second hard drive, using your C drive for only your operating system and program files. This is not only an easy process but it actually can make your video editing run more smoothly!

But you certainly can't operate with 30 gigs of free space on your C drive. Your bulkier programs simply can't work with that little free space.

Beyond that, you could use more RAM but that's not life or death. And you've got a pretty strong processor, so it should be adequate for HD and even some 4K editing.

I believe that the license is locked to the mobo/processor/registry.

I know that you can image and replace the hard drive, because I had it done on two of my computers, although it may be necessary to contact Microsoft to activate Windows.

Reactivating windows on a new drive usually isn't a problem. As Peru says - you can often phone Microsoft to reactivate if it doesn't go through.

Having said that rather than mess around with re-imaging etc - you have a 500GB C drive - and ~30GB free. If Windows is 50GB (Generous Guess) that leaves over 420GB of "other" stuff on your C drive. Could you move anything else to the F drive?

I've recommended before a program called Spacemonger (See this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15386) to see where your data has gone - there are plenty of other similar programs. Sometimes it's as simple as a backup that you put there "just in case" and have forgotten about.

My guess is that the F drive is actually just a virtual drive -- a partition on the C drive for file storage -- not an actual physical drive.

My guess anyway. Otherwise I agree with Chris's suggestion.

I'm sure it's not:

Once again I read too fast. Thanks for setting me right, Peru. Yes, a 4 TB drive makes an excellent second/data drive!

Hi Folks,
Q1,Are there any drawbacks to deleting old files in the Organizer Catalogue.

Q2, I have used PE11 for editing rugby games I have recorded since it was released. This is simple top & Tail stuff using the timeline to edit and add menu titles, also use the CTI to clips out segments.
Will upgrading to PE18 give me a tec upgrade that will be useful or is it just added party gimmicks like some of the other upgrades.

Simple answer is No to both questions.

But if you'd like to explore it further, rigby, I'd recommend you start a new thread, since your questions aren't really related to scratch disks, the original topic.
