Specific to Premiere Elements Version 11.
by rossandjet » Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:28 am
Hi All I am new to the forum and having just purchased APE 11, new to that as well. My question is this, the replay of clips are very jerky making it very difficult to check if the finished video would look good. I have tried rendering and changing from “automatic to highest quality” to no avail. I am sure there must be a way round this but I can't find it. Once a video has been changed to mpeg it will play fine in WMP Thanks

Welcome to Muvipix, Ross!
Would you mind if we moved this to our Premiere Elements 11 forum? It will more likely be noticed there.
Meantime, be sure to tell us what model of camcorder your video is coming from and what format and resolution it is.
Also post your Project Settings, as listed under the Edit menu. You ideally want your project settings to match your video specs. If this is done, you will NOT see a yellow-orange line along the top of your timeline in Expert view. Is this the case in your project.
Finally, be sure to list your operating system, your computer's processor and how much RAM you have so we can fully evaluate your situation.

Your computer is a bit underpowered for AVCHD editing. But you should be able to do some basic editing if your project is set up properly.
Have you ensured that the AVCHD clip from that camcorder is the first clip on your timeline? If you do that, the program should set the project settings based on that clip.
What are the project settings, as listed under the Edit menu?

In Expert view, do you see a yellow line above the clips on your timeline?

Steve, Yes I do, it's about two thirds of the way up the clip line. A continuous yellow line.

Your are talking about along the top of the timeline, right? Not the yellow line that runs through the clips.
If you are seeing a yellow-orange line along the top of the timeline, above your clips, it indicates a mismatch between your video and your project settings, which can result in reduced performance.
Have you ensured that a clip from your camcorder is the very first clip on your timeline? Premiere Elements uses the first clip on the timeline to automatically set the project settings.
Also, what happens if you press Enter to render your timeline (the yellow line along the top of the timeline will turn green)? Does your playback performance improve?

Hi Steve There is a yellow line along the top of the time line, but it is fragmented and only over the top of where I have inserted a photo and either used frame freeze or Pan and zoom to extend it's open time. These turn green when rendered. There is also part of the same line over the clips that is green and some areas with no colour. So it could be where I have rendered some frames and not others.
Is it good policy to render each clip after it has been trimmed or should I wait until the video is finished?

It will play more smoothly if rendered, but each time you make a change to the clip, you may need to render again. It isn't necessary to render before outputting. Rendering is only for previewing.

If you are not seeing a yellow-orange line above your video clips, then your project is set up correctly -- and, for better or worse, the program is operating as efficiently as it will on your machine.
