converting Hi 8 tapes.

I bought a Startech video capture cable and got it to work quite easily. However the colour in the video is a bit faded.
So I invested in a more expensive Canopus ADVC55 because the reviews in Amazon siad the video qiality was excellent.
However when I connect it my video is black and white. I have tried both normal rca plug and s video and it makes no difference.
I have switched 1 and 2 on and off and again no difference.
Anything else I can try?
