Video to Website Qs

Postby _Paz_ » Tue Jan 15, 2013 3:24 pm

I've figured out how to upload a video to YouTube. :exc:

Now I'd like to learn how to load/ install/ embed, not sure which term is correct, a video on my own website, as well as being able to post videos here.

Under Publish and Share> Online, the only settings I see are for Vimeo, YouTube and Facebook.
Under Web DVD it says I need to include a disc menu for chapters, something I don't think I need for a short video.

So, on p 242 of Steve's Muvipix Guide to PE 11 there are instructions to "Output a file to your computer." I'm assuming this is the way to begin. I have AVCHD files, so it seems logical to use that, but I don't see a setting for 1920 x 1080 60p under either M2T file format or MP4. And I'm not sure which of those I should use, either.

Thoughts?

thanks,

Paz

You would definitely not use 60p on a Web video, Paz! It would never stream! There's not nearly enough bandwidth to run high-def at 60p!

What kind of web site do you want to load your video to?

If you're talking about building your own web site and embedding a video in it, I show you how to do that on page 245. Creating video for a web site involves a lot of compromise -- lower bit rate, smaller size, sometimes reduced frame rate. It's the only way to get smooth streaming over an internet connection.

When you load video to sites like YouTube and Vimeo, they're automatically transcoded to reduced quality and sometimes converted to a more efficient format. If you're placing a video on your own web page, though, you need to manually create a file that will stream smoothly yourself.

It may be easier (and cheaper) to embed your YouTube video on your website. Vimeo has better quality in my opinion and there are options to change your player style, not allow downloads, privacy settings such as hide from Vimeo, etc. There is a high def limit on Vimeo unless you are a Plus member and more options comes with the Plus Account. YouTube may have some options too.

Cheryl and Steve, thank you for your replies.

I have several, regular old websites, Steve. Actually, it is one major site with sub - sites that appear to be individual sites. I create them and upload to them via Dreamweaver. My website hosting company charges a flat fee, no matter how much bandwidth I use.

I'm happy enough with the quality level at YouTube.

Cheryl, are you saying I can upload a video to YouTube/Vimeo and then have it play on my own site, or this site, instead of theirs somehow?

I have no idea how to embed a video in Dreamweaver. I do have several DW books somewhere around here.

hmmm... came across this in an older thread and thought it might fit the situation! ;)

>>My grandma wants to know how to post/embed a video. Could you please tell her?
She has a computer.

So, let's see...

(nope, media not found, so instead of flvVideo, I'll try YouTube box above the text box.)

(For the Muvipix Product Reviews. I ordered from Amazon and as I'm sure you can guess, returned it.)

Yea! That worked here.

So if I can use the YouTube presets in PreEl 11 and upload to YouTube and/or Vimeo, then figure out how to embed in my own website, will I be just linking to the YT/Vim or will my own site play it?

Paz, is that an embedded Youtube video two posts up?

If it is, I can't see YouTube embedded video in Internet Explorer Version 10 for Windows 8. There's just a blank white area with an "x" in the upper left.

Your website charges a flat fee? You may want to check the total file size limit. My church's website limit is based on fees for increments of size. We upload to Vimeo and embed on the site to save storage.

I can only speak for Vimeo since I rarely use my YouTube account. On Vimeo I can change the settings so that my video will not show up on Vimeo & I can embed elsewhere. There is also an option to allow embedding only on certain sites. So, if you have a how-to video (I think that is what you are making) you wouldn't want someone to embed your video on their blog for example and to only link. That way it goes back to your website. I have a Plus account and do not know what options there are for the basic.

Here is Vimeo's FAQs:

Cheryl,

I'll double check. Perhaps they allow unlimited sub sites and storage space. Bandwidth might be another matter.

I'm still a little hazy on exactly what embedding is. Had not occurred to me that someone could embed my video on their site, although it should have. A guy from Germany used one of my paintings as a background for his forum one time and it was coming from my site. He did not simply copy it and use his own copied version.

Yes.

It shows for me. I think I'll try it out in the test area and hopefully others will let me know if it is showing up here or not.

Thanks!

Not sure about WIndows 8, but it sounds like you just need to install a/the Flash plugin.

Ron, Flash is installed.

Further, it's IE 10 in Metro mode when there is no video. When in Desktop mode, I can see the video.

Metro mode doesn't support plug-ins. Any site that requires Flash requires desktop mode.
