Conversion to DV-AVI

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 11.

Conversion to DV-AVI

Postby Koen » Sun Nov 11, 2012 7:35 am

Not really specific to 11, but I work with this version now.
I have to make a Dvd from photos and video from different sources (.MTS and .MOV). I learnt from the book of Steve (for version 10) it is best to first convert all video to DV-AVI. The first problem is that in the programs I know (also Premiere Elements) there is no conversion to DV-AVI , but just to AVI. How can one know it is DV-AVI?
I first used Freemake Video Converter to convert everything to AVI (for Dvd - there are many AVI versions in this program, but never to DV). Furthermore there is an error in the program. Converting from MTS part of the audio is lost. I signalled it to the makers, but did not receive an answer yet.
I looked in the same book of Steve to find out what to use best to convert to DV-AVI. With the new windows movie maker it is not possible as he said. Super VIdeo Converter I found out I have to pay for before being able to try it and it is indicated by AVG as a dangerous site to download from! VIrtual Dub does not support MTS. What else?
I could use premiere elements itself is stated by Steve. But then I would have to make as many (little) new projets as I have MTS files!

Does anyone know: 1st how to convert to DV-AVI (and not to another version of AVI) and 2nd with what program.

Many thanks in advance,
Koen

As I said in our e-mail, Koen, you need to be more specific about where your MOVs and MTS files are coming from because there are many variations of each. What model of camcorder is each coming from?

If you don't know, you'll need to open the files in a program like G Spot Codec Utility or MediaInfo and post the codecs, frame rate and resolution here.

Wow, Steve. Your books seem to have taken on almost biblical significance. :hyst:

In attachments information about the 2 kinds of files I have to use. I already saw the mov file is a bit small. The resolution (640x480) is lower that a Dvd's (720 x 576 - PAL country). I'll loose some quality.
With Mediainfo I also found out the avi produced by Freemake Video Converter is not DV-AVI. The codec is AVC. The codec when I convert via Premiere Elements is Sony DV. Why Sony I don't know. The files coming from Premiere are very large.
I have about 20 mov files and and 11 MTS files, plus a number of photos to make a Dvd of.
If information is missing, let me know. Mediainfo can deliver a much more extended list.
Regards,

Koen

I'm waiting for the 12th book of Steve, or possibly the Revelation of Steve.

But for now I will just quote the original Book of Steve, which will forever be known as "The First Book of Steve";
