converting old PE files

Postby Matthew Max » Wed May 14, 2014 4:12 am

Before I go into the tedious process of rendering a few hundred PE project files to avi and then to mp4's, is there an easier way? I notice too much loss of quality when I go from wmv to mp4.

How will the output be used?
What version of PE?

I wanted to make everything an mp4.
PE 4 and 9.
HOWEVER...now I'm thinking that Bits on the Run may be the solution forever.
Anybody know about that kind of delivery? I'd be real interested in opinions.

Bits on the Run is now JW Platform. They recommend uploading MP4.

Thank you, Bob. If I use Handbrake to convert a wmv to an mp4, would it do any better than Adobe Media Encoder?

I see definite loss in videos that have a lot of imprecise footage in them (trees leaves moving, noisy sky).

The problem is in the wmv file. Compression created artifacts in the wmv file and conversion to another format is only going to accentuate them.

Do you still have the original project and source files?

Yes, I have the source files -- or at least most of them. The cursed PE9, as you know, ruins PE4 files when you open them. (How totally ignorant of those software developers. Amazing stupidity.)

Also, I would upload a wmv to Bits on the Run as is, not after converting it.
So, the question about Handbrake is a tech question, not necessarily relevant.

I haven't used Handbrake, so I can't say. You'll need to try it and compare. The decoding should be the same in both, but re-encoding to the new codec could differ depending on whose codec is being used. Adobe uses the Main Concept h.264 codec which is used throughout the industry and is considered one of the best. I have no clue whose h.264 codec Handbrake uses.
