MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2013 Premium

Postby Gerlinde » Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:36 pm

I use a total of 3 different video editors for a variety of reasons, none of them is perfect and does everything I want it to do. I guess I am just very picky [-(
On the other hand, it exercises my brain to learn all the different programs... :ha: :hyst:
Since I just upgraded to a fantastic new computer, I also wanted the new versions of the editors I'm used to.
Not to mention that Magix offered me a great upgrade price of only $79.99 via email ( what a coincidence :conf:) :-D

Here is a link to the product page. What caught my eye was the 64-bit and CUDA support and the nice addition of NewBlueFX Video Essential IV and proDAD Adorage 13.

I went with the download version, which worked pretty reasonably fast. But then I found out, that I needed to also download all the extras. It took a lo o o n n n g g g time of downloading :what:
If you have a slow internet connection you are better off when you buy the boxed version!

So now I have to just get to work and edit some video... ::C

I picked up MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2013 Plus today at Fry's Electronics for $24.99 (Box, No Rebate). It sure was a pleasure having everything installed from the DVD.

Wow, great find. It can't get any better than that! I found already a major flaw in the program, but it is only an issue if you use a tape based HD cam. When I try to capture video from my canon HV30 it will capture for a while and than freeze with an error message. That is with preview turn on. Without preview it works fine. Of course that's a major bummer for me. I had a long exchange with the Magix support Team and we nailed it down to the fact, that Windows 8 comes with a new FireWire driver which causes the problem. In order for this to work as in the older version of MEP it needs the FW legacy driver, which is not supported in Win8. I first tried to simply install the driver, but it is not that easy. Win 8 does not allow you to install an unsigned driver. After googling for a while I found a workaround to install the driver, but any time I restart my computer it gets disabled again, which is a real pain.

I installed Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus on Windows 8, but performance isn't anything as good as 2013. I couldn't even burn a DVD with 17. I'm mighty impressed with the performance of the built in stabilizer, now that I know a radius of 3 is sufficient for 1280x720p video.

Do you think the stabilizer is different from the one in MEP17? I always thought it worked good, better than the one in PRE. Although I never knew what to change in the settings to optimize it.
I haven't had a chance to do much with the new version yet. I'm currently in Germany with my family here. We had some sad events lately and I had not much opportunity to play with all my new toys and programs :( .
Maybe when I get back home I will finally start some serious video editing. Let me know what else you discover with the new program.

I'm sorry you are having sad events to handle.

I'm trying to stabilize some really bad video taken by a close relative. Besides stabilizing it, I've changed the speed to 50 percent. Now it's becoming watchable.

Thanks RJ.
Have you ever tried the NewBlue Stabilizer? When you watch their promo video for the stabilizer it looks very impressive. I have downloaded the free trial and played around with it, I was not too impressed. What mostly interested me was the statement that you could avoid the zooming in and the black bars. But to be fair, I tried it on extremely shaky footage from a Kodak Playsport camera. There was also a lot of jello-ing to deal with.
What is your favorite Stabilizer?

I have the NewBlue Stabilizer. I don't use it anymore, very much. I prefer Mercalli. In Magix, Mercalli has a problem with the Pan smoothing, but roll compensation works great. What I just discovered is the use of dual stabilizers where the Magix stabilizer is used to stabilize in the x and y directions, then Mercalli is used just for roll compensation. You turn off one of the stabilizers while stabilizing with the other, then turn both back on, and surprise.

Gotta go now.

That is a great tip Robert. I will have to try that sometimes. I have never tried the Mercalli Stabilizer.

I found the problem with the pan smoothing of Mercalli in Movie Edit Pro. It's complicated, but has to do with settings on the System tab in Movie Edit Pro. Still, using dual stabilizers makes some of my video look better.
