Great Spots to Photograph

Postby videovillageidiot » Tue Jun 02, 2009 9:09 pm

hi all!! i posted this elsewhere and Steve G suggested i start a thread in the water cooler, so here goes...

i was thinking it would be fun to have an area where people could post about places to photograph - or just visit. ya' know...things that may not be well known - could be a hidden waterfall, historic place, etc. or maybe it's a well known location but you know a great vantage point or the best time of day/year to capture the perfect shot. maybe you know where the deer/moose/bears(!) hang out.

if anyone wants to post a description/location of an interesting spot i think that would be great...just in time for people who may be going on vacation in the next few months (not me unfortunately, so please post photos/video if you go!!)

This is a great idea! I've taken the liberty of making this thread "sticky".

Madison, Wisconsin

* Sunrise over Lake Monona from Olin Park and/or John Nolen drive. There are often sailboats moored at the west end and make great silhouettes at sunrise.
* If you're a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright (or classic architecture) the Unitarian Meeting House is quite beautiful, looking like the prow of a ship sailing through the trees. http://www.wrightinwisconsin.org/Wiscon ... anMeeting/
* One of my favorite views is at or near the Monona Terrace Convention Center, right on Lake Monona. Catch it at sunrise, or a bit later in the morning when the sailboats are out. http://www.mononaterrace.com/
* If you're there on a Saturday, check out the Farmer's Market at the Capitol. Great food and crowd shots with one of the prettiest state capitol buildings in the country (IMHO) as a background.
* UW Memorial Union terrace. Outdoor cafe / beer garden right on Lake Mendota. Everything (except beer without a student ID or a membership card) is available to the public. Another great people and sailboat watcing place, as well as my favorite place to just hang out and read a book.

And many others. If there's something specific you're looking for in Madison, let me know.

Dick, I thought you lived in Colorado! How do you know so much about our neighbor city?

We lived in Madison for 20 years before moving to Colorado, and learned all the best bits of SouthWest Wisconsin in the process. We also made frequent trips to Milwaukee for regular visits to Karl Ratsches (sp?) and Maders, and of course Irish, German, Polish, and SummerFest, as well. I really miss biking the back roads between Madison and Spring Green - every one is paved and you can ride for hours without seeing more than a couple of cars. In fact, I miss just about everything - except for the summertime humidity. ugh.

And I miss the mountains of the West.

But, so true, Madison is one of Wisconsin's true gems!

speaking of mountains (and THANKS for that, Steve, it's my favorite topic!)...Togwotee Pass, Wyoming. i left the tetons one year by this route (26-287) and had the most fantastic view in my rear view mirror!! could hardly take my eyes off it!! :dr: i bet the view is amazing when you're actually facing it.

i looked online to find info on it and came up with this great website http://www.gotogwoteetrail.com/index.php?fuseaction=p0004.&mod=11 - click on "video and photo gallery" to see some cute videos at the bottom of the page.

if anyone is going to yellowstone/tetons area from the east i definitely recommend this.

I love the Tetons. I've never taken that route (coming from the West, it would be out of my way, I would normally go North from Jackson Hole), but since you would be directly facing the Tetons, it would indeed be fantastic. Might be worth a sidetrip next time I'm in the area. :-D

I takes me 20 to 25 minutes to got downtown to the Arch not to far. If highway 40 was open it would be less, so I have to travel highway 44 to get downtown.

Are you going to be in St. Louis? Is that why you wanted to know how long it took me to get downtown?
