The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST)

Postby sidd finch » Sat Jun 26, 2021 8:11 am

Looks like a new drone requirement for flying in the US as of June.

All recreational flyers must pass an aeronautical knowledge and safety test and provide proof of test passage (the TRUST completion certificate) to the FAA or law enforcement upon request. The FAA's 2018 Reauthorization Bill (PDF) introduced new requirements for recreational pilots (see P.L. 115-254, Section 349 (PDF) – exception for limited recreational operations of unmanned aircraft).

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expanding its requirements for pilots to operate a drone in the U.S. This week, it released a new training program all U.S. drone pilots must pass if they want to fly a drone — commercially and recreationally.

Known as the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), this test must be taken if you want to fly a drone over 0.55 pounds. This requirement applies to everyone. So, even if you fly your drone non-commercially, you have to take the test to fly it legally.

The TRUST course focuses on educating people about drone safety and flight regulations. Additionally, the course is broken down into two different sections. The first section of the test will cover the information you’ll need to pass the test, and the second is the test itself. The test is multiple choice and shouldn’t take long to complete.

I found this part interesting:

The second section is a series of multiple choice questions. You cannot fail the test. If you answer a question incorrectly you will be provided with information on why the answer you chose was incorrect and will be promoted to try again.

Upon completion of the TRUST you will receive a completion certificate. The certificate never expires however if you lose your certificate you will need to re-take the test and obtain a new certificate. Neither the test administrator, nor the FAA, will maintain personally identifiable information about the recreational flyer so it is not possible to re-print or re-issue your original certificate.

Well I took the test this morning and I have to say it is doable and does not take a lot of time (and its free).

Even though its big brother it seems like the purpose is to educate about how to safely use your drone so in that respect it was worth it.

And...... I want to fly so best to be compliant with Uncle Sam. Remember for now the under 250 gram drones (think Mavic Mini 2) you do not need this.
