2021 Brood X Cicadas

Postby ed » Wed May 26, 2021 1:51 pm

Anyone else live in the Cicada Brood X region? They are really coming out the last few days, I had hundreds on my fence posts this morning. Also, they seem louder this time then 17 years ago. It sounds like a 1950's science fiction movie all day. I think my dog has eaten about 500 of them on his walks.

Nature is so cool.

I’ll try tomorrow TreeTops, it’s storming right now.

I’m in Maryland right outside of Washington DC.

Ed I see that the A Maryland candy company Chouquette Chocolatesis is selling chocolate covered cicadas to celebrate the emergence of the cicadas -- dipped in either milk or dark chocolate -- online, but it also posted the recipe on its Facebook page for brave chefs looking for something to do with the bugs.

No thanks Sidd. I did read that they taste somewhat like shrimp, and if you have a shellfish allergy you shouldn’t eat them. I guess my dog doesn’t have that allergy.

Here you go TreeTops. It will be twice as loud this afternoon, but I'll be in soul sucking work Zoom meetings the rest of the day so I took this when I could.

Ed it is like the steady drone of some industrial machine. Like some kind of B movie..... attack of the Cicadas... :ha:

I wonder if noise cancelling headphones would deaden that sound.

The hum and buzzing from the Cicadas has gradually decreased over the last few weeks, and is finally gone. It kinda feels likes something is missing.

I developed a roll of film this weekend, and these were on the roll.

There is an interesting documentary called The story of maths by Marcus du Sautoy. In one of the episodes he explains the mathematics behind cicadas only coming out every 14 years. It has to do with making sure that their breeding time does not overlap with other cicada varities that come out at different times. Cool pictures.
