Now that's one strange tourist attraction. I wanna do it! Made me think of Mike Rowe in Dirty Jobs, when people would let him operate all kinds of heavy equipment with little or no prior experience. He really seemed to enjoy that.

Agreed, The place seems like a huge amount of fun and that sounds like a great short video in the making to me.

Camera spotlight – Minolta Hi Matic G

This is a great walking around film camera, especially for vacation snapshots. It is totally automatic, but does give you feedback in the view finder for what shutter speed and f stop it selected, so you can decide to take the photo or not. The shutter speed is from 30 to 650, and the f stop ranges from 2.8 to 14 (14 is kind of low, but it seems to be able to work out a good exposure). Mine is from the early 70’s. It's small enough to put in a jacket pocket, and fits easily in your hand when walking around, making it great for just keeping it with you. I did have to replace the light seals on this camera, and the mercury battery is no longer available, but I use a Wein cell battery that lasts about 6 months.

It is a zone focus camera, with settings to help guide you with the correct distance for the exposure; head shot, head and shoulder shot, group shot (head to feet) and infinity. For street photography I leave it at the group shot setting (about 10 feet). It has a good Rokker 38mm lens that is sharp.

On the negative side, the f stop top range is a little disappointing, and it doesn't have a bulb setting. However, it was designed for the casual person taking vacation snapshots, and it's great at that.

I typically load 100 ASA black and white film or 200 ASA color film into it because that’s what it was designed for, although you can go up to 400 ASA film. I like to shoot film as authentic as possible, so it’s usually T-Max 100 loaded in the camera. I generally don’t Photoshop the negatives, because back in the day that was not an option.

Here's a short slide show I made about the camera and its features:

Here's some photos I took last month with it and developed last weekend.

So my Yashica Electro 35 CCN camera finally showed up from Japan. I've had my eye on this camera for years; it was only made from 1970 to 1974 and not exported to the U.S. I don't believe. It's a hard camera to find.

https://japan-vintage-camera.com is really amazing. The camera looks like it just got unboxed in 1970. Electronics work, lens is clear, shutter timings perfect, and the light seals are new. Well worth paying for the shipping.

Loaded it with Kodak TMax, and will shoot a roll this holiday weekend. It's not the same as Mr. Mom's camera, that's about 1/3 thirds larger and has a 45mm lens where this is a 35mm lens; hence the 'wide' designation. It does share the same electronics and meter system. I have ordered an ND filter since the max shutter speed is 250, and I'd like to shoot Ilford HP5+ with it it.

This is the guy I bought the Yashica camera from. Judging by the date I think he is cleaning the camera that I bought.

My 'YouTube star' camera's meter is pretty good. The shutter speed only goes up to 250, but it was a sunny day shooting with 100 ASA film. I just loaded 400 ASA film in it and put a variable ND filter on the lens. Interested to see how that works.

These are from last Saturday when I drove out to West Virginia to fill out the roll.

I'm a fan of 'pocket' film cameras, I have four of them. I think this guy kind of gets it right, it makes you a better photographer.

I wonder if the bleeding edge tech of today will become YouTube retro in the future. Folks boasting how 4k was so good back in the day that even though they shoot at 256k today the purists still shook 4k. :hyst:

To me Sidd it's the process that I love. Kind of like reading; I read on my Kindle a lot, but there is something about holding a physical book, and turning the pages that appeals to me. Same with film stock and developing the negatives. At the end you have a physical record that you had to touch to make happen. I don't think changing digital settings is the same.

ed this might interest you....

https://emulsive.org/articles/news/new-adox-color-mission-35mm-film-a-reverse-kickstarter

The film, described by ADOX as having “delicately vibrant minty greens, peachy reds, airy grain and a purpose at the core”, is named to reflect what it means for the company: funding for the future development of a brand new colour photographic film. Described as “a kind of a reverse Kickstarter”, a single batch of ADOX COLOR MISSION is available for purchase immediately.

Thanks Sidd! I'm a fan of Adox black and white film. This looks interesting, but very expensive if I add in shipping from Germany and the Covid shipping surcharges in place from our brothers over there.
