Canon's new PowerShot Zoom

Postby sidd finch » Wed Oct 14, 2020 1:29 pm

The PowerShot Zoom, is a new “compact telephoto monocular,”. It’s designed to take a 12-megapixel photos and 1080p video, and work as a viewer for “hiking, birdwatching and nature gazing,”.

To keep the form factor so small, the PowerShot Zoom has a relatively tiny 1/3-inch sensor along with an f/5.6-6.3 lens that supports 100mm or 400mm focal lengths, along with a digital zoom to 800mm (full-frame equivalent.) You can capture either 12-megapixel photos or 1080p video (with a modest 100-3200 ISO range) to a microSD card, and it has built-in optical stabilization along with face-tracking autofocus capability. The battery can last for about 150 shots.

Nice, but it's a shame it only has a digital zoom and not a true zoom. Especially since it's called a Zoom.

I would need a bird tracking feature. Can it do that?

I am not sure if I understand your comment. I assume you would turn your head to the direction of interest and place the device in front of your eye.

I agree Steve on the digital zoom. A real monocular that records video would be cool.

I looked at the specs. It says it has a 4x optical zoom and 2x digital zoom. So, full frame equivalent is 100 to 400mm optical and digital brings it to 800mm.

Thanks, Bob. I should have read the fine print. Or even the regular print. Rather than just watching the ad.

This is in response to Sidd...This device has 'face-tracking autofocus capability.' So if I am doing bird videoing, I would want it to track the bird as it flies in and out of focus.
