New Samsung 980 PRO SSD for video editing

Postby sidd finch » Sun Sep 27, 2020 1:26 pm

The 980 PRO SSD is capable of handling both 4K and 8K content creation. At the same time, it can play graphic-heavy games. So gaming content creators, or creators that want to have some fun from time to time, seem like the audience Samsung was looking to satisfy here. The SSD’s key components, including its Elpis controller, V-NAND and DRAM, should be able to “deliver the full potential” of PCIe 4.0, according to Samsung. This allows the 980 PRO to offer sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s. Also, random read and write speeds can reach up to 1,000K IOPS. This makes the SSD up to two times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs.

$149 for 500 gb and $229 for 1 tb isn't bad for all that power.

From one of the reviews that I read:-

"...the continued elephant in the room for PCIe 4.0 SSDs in general is if you're running an Intel build, move along, because the current crop of Intel CPUs don't support the standard. If you're running a Ryzen 3000 Series or latest Threadripper CPU in your system, you're golden."

It's on my shopping list as soon as I can find one! :)

Thanks John did not see that. I am an intel build so I guess the grass is greener on the other side. But the price seems really good.

I was an Intel fan all through my PC (self build) history but I just couldn't resist the AMD 3900X when I 'explored' my most recent system upgrade from an Intel i7 6700K.

After running the 3900X for a week or two I realised that I needed to upgrade the CPU cooling as my CPU was running dangerously close to the upper limit of 95C. That AMD Ryzen 3900X runs very hot under rendering load.

Fortunately the Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280 dropped my CPU temps by 15C so the problem was solved. :)

Full review here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16087/th ... ssd-review

The fundamental problem facing the 980 PRO and other high-end NVMe drives is that the rest of the system can't keep up. Very few real-world consumer workloads can keep this SSD busy enough to make good use of its full performance potential ....The high sequential transfer speeds can be of some use when transferring data between the 980 PRO and RAM or an equally fast SSD, but the peak random IO performance of the drive simply does not matter to consumers today.

Basically - you'd be better saving your money and buying a 970 evo.
Intel Core i7 8700 - 32GB DDR4 - 500GB Evo 970 SSD - 3+2 TB HDD - GTX 1080- MSI Z370 Pro - Win10 64 bit - Cannon HV30 (PAL) - Sony A6000 - GoPro 3 Black

Nice perspective Chris. Sometimes we get so carried away with speed we overlook the practically of the new device. I am running the 970 so I will sleep better.... lol

As I have my new build based around the ASUS x570/Ryzen 3900X combo which supports PCIe 4.0 for SSDs, I will upgrade my system C: drive to the Samsung 980 PRO and re-deploy my existing Samsung 970 EVO as my D: drive. That will likely be the last upgrade to my current configuration for some years to come. :)
