GoPro 8 vs. my super-duper Sony

Talk about anything here.

GoPro 8 vs. my super-duper Sony

Postby Matthew Max » Mon Jan 13, 2020 2:23 pm

I hesitate to post this question, because most people don't use a camcorder the way I do. I'm a very heavy camcorder user. I also make a lot of my living on a video editor. I have learned to shoot good footage (holding the camera with one hand) while waiting through a stream, walking on a fallen, tree, climbing in the mountains, and going down vertical banks...with this old Sony. I also do a lot of interviews. So...can a GoPro replace this handy Sony and its versatile screen?

That is a really subjective answer. There are good points to each camera system. The biggest is the GoPro shoots 4k but depending on your needs that might be a big deal.

If you are happy with the Sony footage what is your desire to change? Microphone input on a GoPro is a hassle. Doable but a hassle. The middle ground might be to consider a stabilizer for the Sony.

The recommendation to choose is very much like buying a car. What are your needs/criteria?

This Sony is getting old, although the real capability of a camera, as with most forms of technology, is the user's skill at using it. So I could get by with this Sony just fine, except it needs to be replaced with something before it konks out in the middle of a shoot. What kind of hassle do you mean regarding using a microphone with a GoPro?

I use a wide range of microphones -- 1/8 jacks

Because the GoPro uses a USB C connector you have to purchase an adapter for the camera.

Because the adapter is clumsy it makes sense to get a holder that keeps camera and adapter together

Doable.... but a hassle

Wow. That's the perfect example of a design that doesn't consider basic equipment and versatility. Hard to believe.
Thank you again, Sidd.

On the other hand, the camera is really small, and I don't need to mount a mic on it. I just need to plug a mic cord into it.

I think the key to a successful addition of a mic is the case that holds the usb c mic adapter. For $15 it is worth it to keep things safe. Also the Gopro Mic flap can be easily removed so it stays out of the way for the plugin.

There a couple different styles of holders but I found that this one works best.

I can't tell what I'm supposed to be looking at, Sidd.

Hey, I ordered the GoPro 8, which will be in my possession within 48 hrs. Then I'm off to Cozumel, Mexico. Gracias por toda la información que me has dado, amigo!!!

Have a great time. Just another picture of the gopro case that houses the usbc mic adapter.

Ok, I finally see what you mean about the mic adapter. I'll check out the options and decide on one.

Where do I find this holder?
