Where were you?

I was wondering what some of us who have been around long enough remember about what we were doing July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Here’s my own limited recollection.

I was 15 years old, with my parents, sister, and brother on a family vacation trip to the east coast. That night we were in New Hampshire camping in the woods. The campgrounds had a lodge, and that evening found us sitting around a large wooden table with other campers, watching a small b&w TV which was sitting on the mantel above the fireplace. It was just slightly before 11:00 pm local time when Neil took his famous step. I remember the feeling of the contrast between the technology that had gotten the astronauts to the moon, and us sitting in a lodge in the woods watching history being made.

Those are my memories of that night - not many details or specifics, but the scent and feel of the cool night air, sounds and smells of the New Hampshire woods, the beautiful piney lodge, the lateness of the evening, and the feeling of closeness with the other campers as we watched the story unfold on the little TV screen. We knew this was a very special day.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

It definitely was a moment my grade school friends and I had been anticipating for a long time. I remember that, despite it being the middle of summer, we spent most of that week watching Cronkite and Wally Schirra on TV.

I still vividly remember watching that TV broadcast at home. I was a college graduate and had been working about a year as an Engineer in the Hollywood area. I was very much into Astronomy and was a member of several astronomical organizations and had even built my own 10" Newtonian Equatorial mount Telescope including grinding and polishing the mirror. Exciting times!

What a cool time that must have been. The whole world focused on 2 men on the moon. I wonder if we will have the same thing happen if we ever land om Mars.
