anti virus

Postby Bubby Grub » Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:54 pm

Hi Guys,
No Problems just out to get some thoughts on this particular subject. I have heard from different sources, that with Windows 10,
a separate anti virus software is no longer necessary, as Window Defender is quite up to the task. They neither know or like any other software that is better then Windows Defender.
They did say at first they were on the sceptical side In one particular instance I have heard from someone that is quite high up on the tech side, that after having done numerous tests which they did themselves they are now convinced.
They understand that having said that there would be many people out there that would doubt what they are saying, but as told to me
the "facts speaks for themselves". After having heard that I am naturally curious and am wondering about any other thoughts. Any opinions on this subject is very welcome, thanks Bubby ::C

I am still on Win 7 Pro 64 bit so my input doesn't really relate directly to your question on Win 10.

I use Avast (free edition) and periodically run Spybot and Malwarebytes. Never had any problems.
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.

I am only using Windows 10 Pro built in security on my three Windows 10 Pro computers. I do have Malwarebytes free version (not real time) installed, but have never needed to use it on any of the computers.

Using Eset which was advised because it should have a small footprint.

What is this person doing with a collection of malware samples large enough and new enough to test and make any sort of a valid conclusion. ;)

Windows Defender has improved significantly over the years and is now pretty good, but there are more effective products -- both paid and free. Over the years, I've come to respect the ratings from Neil J. Rubenking who is the Lead Analyst for Security at PC Magazine. He has been analyzing and comparing antivirus software for many years and is also an Advisory Board member for the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization. His reviews are unbiased and based on both his testing in the PC Magazine Labs and the results from testing at four major international independent Antivirus testing labs. Windows Defender scored three out of five in the 2019 review. Here are some links for you: Here is the 2019 Windows Defender review. Here are the 2019 reviews for the best free antivirus products. And, finally, here are the 2019 reviews for the best paid antivirus products. Read them and make your own decision.

Bob, thanks for those links. I am glad that my anti-virus program was one of the best. The free version of Avast.

I use ESET's Smart Security which provides a lot more protection than just antivirus.
