PAL and NTSC

"If you have a Region 1 DVD player you in all likelihood cannot play PAL DVDs both for reasons of Region locking and because the great majority of Region 1 DVD players have had their PAL playback ability disabled....."

Useful and informative article on PAL and NTSC

Thanks for that - lots to think about :)
24" iMac. 17" MBP. FCPX and a little bit of Premiere Pro. Nine recent Panasonic HD camcorders. Many (but never enough) terabytes of external storage...

anyDVD says it will strip the region codes from a DVD, although I've never used it for that. It has a full feature 21 day trial if you want to play around with it. It does seem to do what it advertises.

I use AnyDVD, it works well. the main reason I use it is to remove the DRM copyright protection. I have a home theater PC for playing my High Def files but I also playback standard DVDs... software DVD players will not allow a commericial DVD to be played through the TVout (component video in my case) output of a graphics card. Using AnyDVD it strips off the protection "real time" allowing me to play DVDs. It also strips the region code and skips the copyright "blurb" at the beginning of the DVD that you normally have to sit through.
The latest version also strips out the copyright protection of HD DVDs so allowing you to play them as well. They are working on a BluRay update.
With the way things are going regarding copyright protection I am not sure how much longer they will be around.

I use it as part of a way to make iPod videos from DVDs I own.
