Camera decides on new file format???

Postby Paz_Pazzaz » Thu Jul 27, 2017 9:50 pm

I shot a racoon yesterday - well, sort of... anyway, my camera decided to save the file (quite a long one) as .mvd. Actually I now have three .mvd files. Not sure all are racoon. Part might be hummer. Anyway, .mvd file format is not available as a selection in the camera's file formats menu. So how did it decide to do it???

The file should have been saved as :MP4, LPCM, 4K, 150M, LongGOP, 59.94p, Lumix GH5. When I try to view the three .mvd files in the camera itself, they do not show up. The files show up with no preview image in my computer library. Media Player Classic will not open them. They show as blank white icons in Bridge, which will not play them but does offer to search the web to find a way.

I found this page: http://extension.nirsoft.net/mvd
But it's Greek to me.

And this one: https://fileinfo.com/extension/mvd
Still lost.

This one: http://dotwhat.net/file/extension/mvd/10653
Safe to download this??

And then this one that makes the whole thing look kind of iffy: http://www.file-extension.org/extensions/mvd

How could the camera suddenly decide to save as a format it doesn't have?

:ha:

Well, that's pretty frustrating! A camcorder with a mind of its own.

I sure wouldn't download any additional codecs or software to play it. Though it might be worth checking to see if Handbrake can convert it to an MP4.

Beyond that, let's see if anyone else in the Muvipix community has any suggestions.

That extension is used by Magix to designate a project file. It's not a video file extension. But I can't figure out why your camera would create a file with that extension.

Me either! I'm afraid it may be corrupted on the sdxc card. I have other footage of George....Cooney... (yes, we name our regular visitors, the sillier, the more fun!), but I think this was the best I've ever gotten. The Cooney file is 18GB. Perhaps enough to choke up any card!

Though it might be worth checking to see if Handbrake can convert it to an MP4.

Handbrake? A file converter? I'll try that. And let y'all know.

Thanks guys!

Have you tried just changing the file extension to .mp4 to see if it really is an mpeg and behaves like one? Worst scenario is that you would have to change it back to .mvd.

Excellent suggestion Dave :TU:

Tried it just now... it WORKED!

I also tried "Handbrake". It worked but lowered the resolution of the file so there was a lot of posterization. Then I tried "WonderShare" video converter, which said it could translate large files. It did. No posterization, but it did lower the pixel size. Not sure if that was because I was using the trial version or not. But changing the bit after the DOT...
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wheeeeeee! Mr. Cooney and I thank you!

Glad it worked, but it sure does seem odd. So do you have Magix on your computer? Still not making any sense. George Cooney is a handsome raccoon!

Nope. (Glad I don't have to buy it to see that file!)

Agreed, weird.

George Cooney is a handsome raccoon!

Indeed. His tail is a little thin but this is his summer coat. I'm glad he is healthy looking. We've had some animals stroll by that obviously have had hard times. Scrawny especially... but George feeds well. When he comes all the birds fly away. We experimented for years before Mr. B figured out how to keep him from eating an entire bell shaped honey glued seed feeder every night. Still, sometimes coons carry rabies and I wish he didn't come. At least he hasn't (yet) brought his whole family. Back when we had chickens the Coon clan would break into the chicken house at night and slaughter a few chickens. That's why we don't have chickens anymore!

Thanks for the help!
