New Desktop

Postby Chuck Engels » Fri Mar 25, 2016 2:11 pm

After much searching, reading reviews and waiting for the right opportunity it finally happened. I can now semi-retire my Dell Precision 490 which has been an awesome computer but is not completely Windows 10 compatible and never will be. I am going to continue to use it for my Christmas lights display :)

I found this on Amazon for $525, upgraded the GPU to 4GB and the RAM to 32 GB for another $300 and have a desktop that's worth a whole lot more. I was not sure about moving from Intel to AMD but I think this is going to work out great. Now I can have more fun editing and will need to do a lot of testing :)

System:
Liquid-Cooled AMD FX-6300 3.50GHz 6-Core (4.1GHz Boost) | AM3+
8GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800
1TB/8GB Hybrid SSD |
Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 360 2GB - 2x DVI | 2x HDMI | 2x DisplayPort
24X DVD±RW Dual-Layer Drive
Audio: 7.1 Channel | Gigabit LAN | Keyboard & Mouse
Expansion Bays/Slots Total(Free): 3(2) Ext. 5.25" | 6(5) Int. 3.5" | 2(1) PCI | 3(2) PCI-E x1 | 2(0) PCI-E x16 | 4(3) DIMM 240P
Connectivity: 4x USB 3.0 | 8x USB 2.0 | 1x RJ-45 Network Ethernet 10/100/1000 |
Chassis: Gaming Mid-Tower w/500 Watt Power Supply | Genuine Windows 10 64-Bit

Thanks Paz :)

I have been having a lot of fun so far. Finally got 80% of the programs installed and updated, installed the new RAM and Video Card. Have a minor issue with the DisplayPort not working well with a DVI adapter but have new cables coming. Got my Blu Ray burner from my old system up and running on the new one, that as a little tricky to start with but is working great now. This machine is very fast and so far I am extremely happy with what I was able to get for the price. More testing and fun to come !!

I thought I could add the graphics card that came with this system to my Dell Precision but the new card is PCIE 3.0 and the Dell is too old. If anyone is interested in a XFX- AMD Radeon R7 360 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card I have one for sale on eBay and would let it go for a good price to anyone here, just make me an offer.

How does the liquid cooling work? It's not like a radiator where you unscrew a cap and put coolent into it, is it?

I don't think so RJ, no instructions for maintenance. There are some pretty heavy duty tubes in there but not sure how it works. The reviews for this unit were very good and there were over 500 of them. Here is the info;

I would expect that the liquid cooling system in that computer is a prefilled closed loop type. Those are sealed and you don't add coolant. Typically, those only cool the cpu and essentially replace the cpu cooling fan/heatsink.

All liquid cooling systems have a radiator, a pump, tubing, a heat exchange block for the component to be cooled, and a coolant. They can be either closed or open loop systems. A closed loop system is preassembled and prefilled -- you don't add or change the liquid and it typically only cools the cpu and is not customizable. An open loop system is customizable. You can buy blocks for additional components such as the GPU, Northbridge, and RAM. And, you can route the tubing as desired. Open loop systems need to be filled with coolant and will have either a coolant reservoir or some type of coupling device for filling.

This one is maintenance free and guaranteed for 55,000 hours, that should be about 10 - 12 years for me.

One thing that I found kind of funny but very interesting, this system has a 6 pin Firewire port on the back !!

Been having some fun experimenting with the new system. Not much difference at all in Premiere Elements between the new desktop and the laptop except the new desktop plays anything and everything without a hiccup or stutter. 2 Go Pro clips about 6 minutes long with the Hollywood Movie Effect (3 way color correction) applied took about 9 minutes to render on both systems. The Laptop playback was a bit slow and stuttered at first then settled down, the desktop played the clip perfectly.

Premiere Pro CC 2015 on the other hand is a whole different story. I added a 3 minute Go Pro Clip to the timeline and added the 3 way color corrector. The desktop didn't even need to render, the laptop took over 5 minutes to render the clip. Added the Echo effect, desktop took 3.5 minutes to render and the laptop took almost 8 minutes. Nice improvement that's for sure :TU:

Chuck you will need to start using your Latin Name: Renderus Maximus. :)
