Talk about anything here.

My church recently purchased "short throw" projectors which are currently displaying their contents on our sanctuary walls. We are looking to obtain projection screens and we have no idea what to look for in such a screen.
Can anyone here make a recommendation? Brand name? Material type? Thickness? Things to look for or things to avoid?

How large do you need it to be (or how large is the theater you're showing it in) and how much can you spend?

Good questions. Image size is approximately 4' x 8'. Screen will be permanently wall mounted (doesn't need to be retractable). Don't know the budget but since this is for a church, you can bet it is "inexpensive".

I created a screen that works great. 4 x 2 board frame and 300 thread count or better sheets. You can paint it a semi gloss white or they even make special paint just for this purpose. Mine cost less than 100 and it has worked great in my movie room for over 6 years. Mine is about 5' x 7'.

Thanks for the link Steve, and thanks for the great idea Chuck!
Chuck, how heavy is your screen assembly? I presume you made the frame yourself, yes?

Ron based on Chuck's idea you might be able to use some PVC tubing 1-2" diameter for the frame. The hot glue a Velcro border to the PVC and the material. You can then stretch the material to make the screen tight all the way around.
The PVC would help reduce the weight especially if you are hanging in the air. I would also suggest that you look into your local building code requirements to see what is required for suspending something in the air.

600 thread count or more might even work even better I used 4 x 2 boards and stapled the sheet to the boards really tight, pulled it as tight as I possibly could without ripping the sheets. When the paint dries it also tightens everything a bit.

No sheets. They eventually pick up so much dust that you need to pull it down and vacuum or wash it. Just get a real pull down screen that reflects much better than a sheet.

Sorry Ron, must have missed this question. Yes, I made the frame out of 1 inch by 4 inch pine boards. The whole thing can't weigh more than 10 lbs.

Once you paint the sheet it isn't a problem, mine doesn't collect any dust at all.

I suppose if it is slightly angled in the right direction, dust is less likely.
