That's great! But McDonalds really does have the best fries.

Dave, did you know that McDonald's fries include an anti foaming agent. It is an ingredient only used here in the USA and is not allowed in the UK. Not sure what the purpose of that ingredient is but don't like the thought of it. I love their fries and worked for McDonalds for years, don't like the microwave approach to cooking that they use these days however ... ::C

It's called dimethylpolysiloxane and it's contained in the cooking oil to reduce splatter and foaming of the oil. Anything that goes into the deep fryer will contain a small amount of it -- for example, fries and Chicken McNuggets. I don't know where the story about it not being allowed in food in the UK started, but it's not true. It's item E900 in this list of approved additives.

You may also know this chemical by other names. For instance, it's known as dimethicone and simethicone in over the counter medicines designed to break up intestinal gas and reduce flatulence. It's also the main ingredient in Silly Putty. It's a very common additive and an ingredient in many types of products.

You're right. How about sending me some? But you'd better make it priority shipping...I want 'em hot when they get here. ;)
