I guess there are always some problems for early adopters.

But I'm a big advocate of Windows 10 and I like Microsoft's plan to give away the farm in order to get everyone on the same operating system.

I've been using Windows 10 since it was first released to testers last fall and I love it. I've already installed the final release on two computers and they both run flawlessly. So, in my not so humble opinion, I really think problems are the rare exception rather than the rule.

Though cooler heads, like Bob, may disagree.

If problems don't show so much in the initial public release, there's a recipe for disaster in the forced updates. We all know of certain updates causing troubles with some systems. Up until now we could always take a "wait and see" approach to updates, choosing to not install them until they've proven to be safe. Now they're going to be forced upon everyone. Hold on to your hats.

From the article:

And yet it is important to be clear here about the potential benefits of Microsoft’s decision to make Windows 10 updates unstoppable. While bugs like the Nvidia issue here are a potential side effect, it is far more common for PCs to be hit with problems because their software is not up to date than because it was updated too quickly.

Microsoft is therefore taking a greater good approach which will see millions of Windows 10 computers around the world be more reliable and more secure in general.

I've been waiting for 3 months for Woody to recommend installation of Windows Updates. During that time, I've been relying on Norton Internet Security, and I haven't detected any problems.

Foolish?

Just lucky?

There are ways to disable Win 10 automatic updates and "ZDNet reports that Microsoft has released a tool which can hide or block unwanted Windows 10 updates. It is noted that this tool has been released as a "well hidden" trouble-shooter package and works with the final (10240) preview build. KB3073930 has a simple interface which first asks you whether you want to navigate to a list of updates you can hide, or to a list of previously hidden updates(see screengrab below). On the next page of the UI you can toggle updates with check boxes."

Just saw this yesterday. That's a good thing. Now are we going to be able to uninstall updates if necessary?

I think you have about 10 months to decide if you want the free upgrade.

You can always clone your hard drive and update windows 10 the cloned hard drive and just save the original drive. That way if you really don't like it you can put your old hard drive back in your machine and you are good to go.

One last thought on this and then I'll shut up.

Windows 10 is Microsoft's answer to Apple's OSX. They free upgrade is Microsoft's attempt to get the world on the same operating system -- which they hope to use as a platform for any future updates (all of which will likely also be free).

In my experience using it for the last six months, it's a solid operating system with some nice new features.

It won't change your life -- but neither will switching to a Mac from a Windows machine. It's just an operating system. But it's a good one and, six months from now, everyone will or should be on it.

So it's up to you if you want to take an hour to upgrade to it. Now or later. But eventually it will definitely be something you'll want to do.

What we're experiencing now is the same old doomsayer reaction we hear whenever a new OS is released. Even MacIntosh gets it whenever they release their next generation of OSX -- even though ultimately the buzz dies down, everyone gets on the new version and life goes on until the next upgrade.

I agree with you Steve. I think 10 is the way to go too but I also like to wait till the dust settles before I upgrade. I am probably one of the few users who uses Windows 8 and like it.

Actually, I kind of liked Windows 8.1 too, Sidd.

My opinion? The best operating system is the one you don't notice because you're too busy getting stuff done.

I hate the forced updates to Windows 10, which are prone to failure and devastating disaster.
