The "Instruction Manual" technique

Postby PattiJ » Sat Mar 03, 2007 8:33 pm

I love Brian Skinner's video "Instruction Manual" at chuckengels.com, and I'd love to use a similar technique to introduce scenes in a video I'm working on. Basically if I video someone writing words on a pad, speed up the clips, and add appropriate sound effects, am I on the right track?

Thanks in advance,
Patti Jenkins

Yup, I think that will be going in the right direction. I think Brian explained exactly how he did that at some point. I will see if I can find the post.

I will try again tomorrow to do a search for Brian Skinner and see if he ever did expain it, I am pretty sure he did.

You could also do a stop motion version of that. I've seen some good examples of that out on the internet. If you have APE v3 you can use that with your camcorder, otherwise you could use a digital camera and JPGVideo (free) to bring in the photos and convert to DV-AVI.

I found the clip where doing it as a stop motion is explained.

Thanks so much for the replies and for the research you guys did. I have a whole new appreciation for stop motion work. It's way more work than I imagined!! I think I'll use the approach Brian used--videotape writing on a tablet, then speed that up.

To all of you stop motion artists, my hat's off to you!!

Thanks,
Patti
