Anyone tried down converting 4k to 1080p?

Postby Ron Hunter » Mon Sep 08, 2014 6:19 pm

In his detailed review of the Panasonic GH4 Dave Dugdale extolls the benefits of shooting in 4k and then down converting to 1080p. He provided video clips that show how digital noise and moire were dramatically reduced by doing this.

I know 4k is a new frontier and many people (myself included) haven't taken the plunge, but has anyone tried this yet? I see that the GoPro Hero3 Black can shoot in 4k (15fps?)

The comparison shots Dave provided of the 5DMarkIII vs the GH4 were amazing; the added detail in the GH4 videos needs to be seen to be believed. I am not a pro and I don't have a 4k TV but the idea of shooting in 4k and down converting to 1080p for the increased level of detail is very interesting. Everyone can appreciate more detailed images, right? :TU:

It would be interesting to see a comparison to get a sense of what 4k vs 1080 looks like. BTW the 4K on the GP is not so good. Needs to be on a tripod and not a lot of movement.

Thanks Sidd. Dave Dugdale showed images of the Panasonic GH4 at 4k, at high frame rates the focus was softer than at slower frame rates, which makes sense. However, I think the 4k 60fps downconverted to 1080p was stunning. Really making me want one!
