Time Lapse sunset & storm clouds

Postby sidd finch » Tue Jul 30, 2013 12:34 pm

I thought I would try my hand at some time lapse. I used my Flip to record approx. 1.5 hours of the sky and then sped it up. It was a pretty stormy day and the skies looked really cool. The storm clouds looked like someone poured ink into the air.

Those were great! I loved the music in the storm clouds vid and watching the rain showers move off in the sunrise video was a nice surprise. :TU:

Thanks Dave, The music is from KillerTracks. Their atmospherics collection has some really cool music clips. The Sunrise clip music is an opera singer named Carlo Bergonzi.

In the storm clouds video you can see a reflection of my flip camera in the lower middle portion. It was really Lightning outside so I did not want to risk it all for the shot. :)

Very good Sidd. What software did you use to speed up those clips?

Stunning clouds and the music fit for both. The first one had some ominous looking clouds. Were you in a vehicle when the storm was approaching? Lightning scares me.

TreeTop I used Premiere Pro CS5 at a setting of 10,000 to speed up the video. Paz, I love those rolling sunbeams too especially as the clouds reflect some of the light.

Mom, I was standing on the front porch of the house where we were on vacation. The storm was moving in fast and I could see the lightining but did not hear any thunder until later so I knew we had a bit of time. With it so open you can see the different weather approaching from many miles away. It is such a cool switch from city living where you only get a small slice of the sky to see.

As I was about to move and grab the Flip because it was starting to rain. I caught the following picture just before I raced inside. You can see that the raindrops already started to hit the lens of the camera.

That is some open country and the lightning was too close! I've heard of people getting a jolt as they touched the metal door handle.

>> slice of sky

Here too. Too many trees. Great spot to vacation. Reminds me that my son lives in Montana!!!

Did you film these as timelapse , that is, stops and starts, or is it one continuous shot sped up?

Paz it was filmed as one continuous shot then sped up in PPro.

Mom it was filmed on the open prairie..

>> continuous

Excellent!

Glad to know this can be done. I haven't been happy with some of the jumpiness (spelling?) of some time lapse shots I've taken. Blips of insects passing, too much time passing so the object under consideration has jumped from one position to another , etc.,

Still feeling happy thinking about those rolling sunbeams! I grew up in a small town that happened to have lots of sunbeams. Always made me think of God smiling down towards Earth.

Paz this is a cool song, I will have to remember it for a future opus.

My pleasure, Buddy. Satchmo's "It's a Wonderful Word" has been swirling through my memories too, having re-heard "Lucky Old Sun" again, after so many years.

Sid,

"Lucky Old Sun" is an old song. Many artists have recorded it, so there are many versions to choose from. You can find a lot of them easily on YouTube.
