How to make tutorials?

Postby _Paz_ » Thu Jul 11, 2013 9:07 am

How do people make video tutorials, say to play on YouTube, that shows the image on screen, like a screen capture, mouse position and movement, etc as they go from one step to the next? Are they setting up a camera to video their computer screen or is there software to do this?

thanks,

Paz

Both.

http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html is one popular piece of software.

http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm is another.

Chuck will probably be able to give you information in detail.

Hi Paz,

Most people use software for that. Camstasia Studio ($299) is fairly popular. That's the one used to make the Muvipix tutorials. If you want to test the waters, there is the free Camstudio open source product.

I see Peru posted while I was still writing my reply. :-D

I forgot about Faststone. That's more of a screen capture tool, but it can record a session to a wmv file if I'm remembering right.

And we use Camtasia Studio on Muvipix to make our tutorials. I love it. Easy to use but with excellent results.

Thanks! I knew you guys would know!

I've tried downloading the free version 3 or 4 times now. A couple of different versions from a couple of different sources and deleting then manually removing the remains. I've applied for membership to their forum to see if I can get help figuring out what's wrong.

I've been having trouble trying to record with CamStudio.

My laptop monitor's maximum resolution is 1920 x 1200. I use it at 1440 x 900.

I've tried several times recording with "full screen" option selected, with "flashing" turned off. It doesn't work. I try to record for a while, finish my project, and then find that CamStudio is no longer running but on a screen that is behind the image on my monitor I've been recording, everything is flashing. I have to go into the desktop toolbar to turn CamStudio off. Nothing can be saved. No matter if I run "full screen" or set the actual size of 1440 x 900, I have not been able to get it to work.

1280 x 720 has worked... but slowed to standsill when running healing brush in Photoshop, and in playback mode in Windows Media Player, it runs faster than the original recording speed. Not to mention that without my entire screen showing, it isn't clear what I'm actually doing and I don't care for having everything swim across the screen when I go to, say the toolbar in Photoshop.

Since it has worked, although not so well, with a smaller resolution selected, I'm wondering if resolution is my problem. Anyone else had this sort of problem?

When you all are recording, what is your actual screen resolution and what resolution size do you use in your setup?

thanks,

Paz

It does take a lot of power to run Camtasia and your other programs, Paz. Before I got my new computer, things sometimes bogged down when I tried to use Camtasia with some very intensive video editing.

You don't say how fast your system is, but laptops are probably not the best choice for this kind of intensive work.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you "find that CamStudio is no longer running but on a screen that is behind the image on my monitor I've been recording, everything is flashing." I'm not sure what would cause flashing!

What are your computer's specs?

Laptop... Yeah, I guess it's getting a little long in the tooth. That could be it. I went digging and found my specs:

Lenovo ThinkPad W701

Win 7 Untimate, 64 Bit, Service Pack 1
Intel Quad Core i7 CPU, 8 Threads
1.73 GHz = current speed
PCH QM57 Chipset
Q720 @ 1.60 GHz
16 Gigs DDR3 (1333 MHz) RAM
4096 MB DDR-3 SDRAM (1333) X 4
NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800
Video Card Memory 1.00 GB

4x 32.00 kB L1 Instruction Cache
4x 32.00 kB L1 Data Cache
4x 245.00 kB L2 Cache
6.00 MB L3 Cache

Two 1T, 7200 rpm hard drives, each with 32.0 MB cache

CamStudio has a "flashing" setting that can be set up so the flash indicates the margins that are included in the screen capture settings... that is, it will indicate the margins of what will be recorded. Seems to me that when setting up to record the full screen, there wouldn't be any visible area that would not be recorded, so I turned the setting OFF. Apparently it somehow gets set to 'on' anyway and when that happens everything goes wild, flashing and it isn't easy to turn off.

Steve,

Are you using Camtasia or the Adobe program, Captivate?

What screen resolution are you using?

I only use Camtasia, both for the my Muvipix and my Lynda.com tutorials. I love it!

PS, you may want to include your computer specs in your signature, as many of us have done. That way it shows up every time you post a question. It's a great time saver!

Okay, I'll set up my specs later. Dinner's almost ready!

Um, what screen resolution do you use, Steve?

My screen is 1280x1024. But, when I record tutorials, I'm only recording an area about 1200X900.

Looks like your processor is much faster than mine, Steve.

My screen is 1280x1024. But, when I record tutorials, I'm only recording an area about 1200X900.

Does that mean you leave your overall screen resolution alone, at 1280x1024, and then set up for Camtasia to record 1200x900 of that amount, so you are not recording your full screen?

If so, I didn't notice your tutorials moving from one side of the screen to the other, the way the only successful one (in that it would play) I did - did. Maybe because it didn't do wild swings, I didn't notice.

It's not a huge reduction. How/why did you settle on that particular size?

The tutorials on our site are displayed at 1024x768. Shooting them at 1280x1024 gives me the same dimensions and just a bit more resolution.

1024x768

Ah! I see. The most often used resolution these days. Makes perfect sense.

Thanks, Steve!

I'm back to this again. I simply MUST get this done soon.

Does anyone here use Faststone?

http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm

If so, is it possible to highlight the cursor so the movements are easy to follow?

CamStudio is out due to malware and Snagit doesn't highlight the cursor.
