1939 New York City in vibrant color

Postby sidd finch » Sat Jun 01, 2013 9:49 am

The video looks like a typical vacation movie...not a big deal but when you realize it is 1939 and in color showing the sights it becomes a really cool window back in time. It is always amazing how life is still the same just new gadgets, cars, and clothes styles.... Sidd

Wow! That's some terrific looking footage!

I can't imagine that someone was able to shoot color home movies in 1939 -- but maybe. Anyway, it's some great stuff!

Maybe it was "colorized."

Wasn't it Turner Entertainment that started this whole colorization business? They won't stop until all black and white film has been colorized !!! They are even going after home movies now ::C

I had a great uncle who was always buying the latest gadgets, so my mother tells me. Somewhere in the vaults is color video he took back in the late 30's. It was 8mm film spliced on to a roll of 8mm black and white.

Gone With The Wind (1939) and The Wizard of Oz (1939) were both color. In the case of Kodachrome amateur and documentary films and color prints, the dyes are so stable and the deterioration so slow that even prints now over 70 years old typically show no obvious problems. Unfortunately, the dyes in the far more common Eastmancolor print film, and some similar products from other manufacturers, are notoriously unstable.

How well dressed and thin they are!

I remember having to wear a dress, socks or stockings, gloves and a hat when going downtown. How things have changed!
