.avi files

Postby Walter Seaton » Mon Aug 20, 2012 6:20 pm

I have a group of .avi files with which I would like to work in PRE8 but I can not find a way to open them in PRE8.

How can I do that?

Hi Walter,
What error do you get when you try and add them to the project?
AVI is just a container for many different codecs like MJEPG (Motion JPEG) and even some forms of MOV.
You can download a small program called gspot, that will help you find out exactly what the file is made of.
Once we know that we can help you get everything you need to work with it, most likely just a simple codec.

I vaguely recollect (which means that I am probably wrong :???: ) that GSpot was having issues lately and that Media Info was the better alternative tool.

Thank you both. I took John's advice and downloaded MediInfo and can now answer your questions.

1. If PRE8 is not open and I right click on the desired .avi file and select "Open" with PRE8, PRE8 opens but the file is not imported. When I then go to File/Open Project I get the screen (avi attached at bottom) which will only accept *prel files (there is nothing else listed when I click on the chevron in the "Files of type" field). The same thing happens if I load PRE8 from scratch and then try to Open project. However, the attached (clips in middle) shows part of the more than 70 .avi clips which show up in Windows Explorer.

2. I have taken one of the .avi clips at random (they were all generated in the same way from the same source) and attach the resulting window as you requested (mediainfo at top).
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Where did these files come from?

If they were captured using a program like MovieMaker, they may be Type 1 AVIs instead of Type 2.

Hi Walter,
I think you will be fine if you simply add the files to your project using Add Media / From Files and Folders.

First start a new project, then add the files using Add Media. The way you are trying to get Premiere Elements to open the files will not work, it thinks you are trying to open an existing project. If you need additional help I would highly recommend watching the free basic training tutorials.

What Chuck said. The reason that you're only seeing .prel files is because that's the only file type that Premiere Elements opens directly. Those are project files, which contain all of the information that it needs about your edited project. Once you've started a project then you can then add files to it. Actually, I think it would be Get Media > PC Files and Folders.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

If you are not sure how to create a project and add media, see our free Premiere Elements 8 Basic Training videos on this page: http://www.muvipix.com/products.php?subcat_id=44 (about 7 rows down).

One other issue is that the AVI file was made using the DVCPRO codec. That's not normally found on a Windows PC. If you look at that file in GSpot it will tell you whether that codec is installed on your system.

Thank you all very much for your efforts.
To answer Steve, they were originally Super8 footage digitized by the top professional lab (used by CTV, CBC) in Toronto and burned to a DVD. I uploaded the DVD to my PC and then opened them in PRE8. I selected what I needed and then created the .avi files in PRE8.
Chuck, I followed your suggestion and it solved my problem.
Dave. thank you for your additional explanation - it also helped.
Bob, thank you too, but I started using Premiere when it was version 6.5. As a non-professional I just could not afford to keep on upgrading the professional product.
