Premiere Pro discussions.

I have several camera video files for a project. The files "MVI_1094.AVI", "MVI_1117.AVI" etc. I used 2 in AE with no problems. When I import into PrPro the bar on the lower right reads "conforming". They are 640x480 1.0 30fps. Do I need to convert before using in PrPro? Almost ready to give up editing this week. When it rains it pours.

Let it conform, not a problem.

Project keeps crashing. Read that Canon MVI camera files are h.264 files. What can I use to convert to Qtime or AVI?

Cheryl,
Do you happen to know what camera took these videos ?
Not ALL Canon MVI files are H264. Older Canon cameras take MJPEG written to an .avi file type.

The file in gspot:
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. aka Cheryl Intel i7 3770, Windows 7 Pro w/SP1, 64 bit, Intel 520 Series SSD, 32G RAM, 2 – 2T RAID, (1T external), GTX 550 Ti graphics

Cheryl,
Good to know that these files are Motion JPEG (MJPEG). I noticed that they are Standard Definiton (640x480 and 4:3). Also that the audio says 2 channels, so I expect it to be stereo audio (good news because some cameras only have mono audio for which I did a fill of the other channel when using Premiere Elements) .
I have never used Premiere Pro (only Premiere Elements) but I suspect that converting to DV-AVI will be your best choice. Which converter - potentially Windows Movie Maker or Prism.
However I would suggest that someone with PPro experience also comment.

FYI - I notice that GSpot says that you have the necessary codec: however I will add that across multiple versions of Premiere Elements there have been experiences reported that some people experience problems using the Motion JPEG codec that comes with Windows. Conversion or installing an additional Motion JPEG codec seem to be the solutions. For you working on this clients video, I think conversion is a better approach rather than adding another codec to your system.

Hi again Cheryl, I am doing a separate post to add more info about converters http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0is an FAQ written by Steve Grisetti over on the Adobe forum that actually points back to some sources at muvipix I noticed that this FAQ does not include mention of Prism and I am not sure why. Perhaps Steve can comment.

Thanks Barb, I will try the WMM route. I tested one of the clips by bringing into a new PrPro project, rendered the clip and tried to export via AME. The AME window would not open, error message, then crashed.

Converted the files via WMM. Imported into project and still crashing. For process of elimination, created a test project and imported the files. Added effects, edited, etc and no problem. Opened an old project and played with it and no problem. So those files are okay and the program is okay.
Looked again at the crashing project and the intro was a .mov export from AE and in the intro are 2 video clips. I remembered reading somewhere (Cow?) that .mov is a wrapper and still contains the original codecs. Opened AE & swapped out the clips with the converted ones and exported a new intro .mov file. Replaced that file in the PrPro project and things seem to working now. (I say that hesitantly after way too many crashes. Working with fingers crossed.)
