Tripod recommendation

Postby mark hansen » Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:25 pm

I'm looking for something to augment my steady cam and need a tripod. I saw a nice one at Ritz camera that had a VERY smooth head in both directions and it seemed very steady as the legs were bigger than the standard. Nope don't remember the name and now its gone, I should have got it on an impulse. The other nice feature is it had two handles... one main one and one that rotated the camera vertical to give the picture a twist. Something I have tired with my steady cam and had only mild success. Can't seems to keep the subject in the frame. I thought a head like would be handy.

It also had the stabilizers on the legs, something that not all tripods had.

Anybody have suggestions I can look at?

If it is Manfrotto you can't go wrong, I don't think there are any better tripods anywhere.

You can get them at B&H, not cheap but they are the best ;)

Manfrotto is what I use, and I love it! There are other good brands out there, but they are the 800 lb. gorilla in the industry. As far as features go, you definitely want a fluid head for smooth pans and tilts, a quick-release plate is very convenient, a built-in bubble level certainly helps, and sturdy legs to resist torque when panning. And make sure it's rated for the weight of your camcorder.

I also have Monfrotto and think they're the best. I have one heavy duty tripod for when carrying stuff around is not an issue and I have a light weight one that folds up to 13 inches for when I know I'm going to have to carry it around.

I just bought a Smith-Victor. Very substantial - no tortional shifting at all. Only problem - it's rated for a 20 pound camera and my Canon HV20 kinda looks funny on it!
