PrEl12 - importing avi fileI am trying to import avi video files taken with a digital camera back in 2011 and saved on an external hard drive. I have copied them onto my computer's hard from the Ext. drive. They play fine with Win. Media Player, BUT my PE12 will not import them with this standard message: "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed." This version of PrEl12 does import avi files from our current digital camera. Steve asked me to show this info below to figure out how I can make my PrEl12 import these avi files [I opened one of the video files in MediaInfo and changed "View" to "Text" per Steve's instructions. I think I have attached a screen capture of the display. I made a screen capture; the question is whether this tired 70-year old brain completed this post correctly] Thank you for an help....understand I am not one who grew up with computers......slide rules, baby!

Re: PrEl12 - importing avi fileHi, Carol. The problem is that this is a MJPEG AVI, a file format that was popular delivery format a decade ago but is not an easy format to edit.A Adding to your issue is the fact that this is an extremely low resolution file -- 320x240, about 1/16 the size of today's 1920x1080 video.
You still should be able to edit this in Premiere Elements 12 if you convert it to an MP4. The best program to do this with is the free download Handbrake. Our tutorial will show you the settings to use to do this. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: PrEl12 - importing avi fileThank you, Steve. I'll give it a try. I thought I had set my post to email me once there was a reply, but that did not happen. I am sorry I have not replied until now.
Re: PrEl12 - importing avi fileI downloaded HandBrake and tried to open the app. I received the attached message. I am leary of just randomly downloading anything from anywhere. What is your opinion? Thank you.
