Talk about anything here.

Hi Guys, No problems, just something I thought I would run by you all, basically to get your thoughts. The other day I was talking to an IT friend of mine, and to cut a long story short, there is no need for a third party virus software now with win 10, it has it all covered. I was a little taken back, not that I don't believe her I definitely do she knows her stuff, and anything she has ever told me has never been rubbish. She admitted it took a lot of seminars to convince her, plus she said it is very hard to convince their business clients this fact, understandably as this is something we have lived with our whole lives. But as she said it is her opinion and the opinion of many others higher then her. Basically the 3rd party just has a lot of unwanted stuff, as they don't have anything different to offer. The key of course is the updates. At this stage it is up to your own preference. Sandbox was mentioned as the best idea if you want anything at all. Anyway just wondered what your thoughts are one way or the other. Bubby

I will be kind (about your friend's advice) and say that I remain sceptical. But then I am on Windows 7 and, despite the vocal support that it garners, I do not intend to go down the Win 10 route - it will be Linux for me when Win 7 goes out of support.
On my PC I have the free version of Avast with which, in addtion to running constantly in the background, I periodically run a boot scan.
Also once a month or so I check all installed software for updates and at that time I run the free version of Malware Bytes and also Safer Networking's Spybot Search and Destroy.
Seems to do the trick for me.

FWIW, I haven't had a 'third party' anti-virus software since 2009 (Win7) and haven't had a single problem. Currently fully updated with Win10.

I use ESET and have for over 10 years now. All of my computers are now on Windows 10 but I have trusted their software for a long time and do not mind paying a little every year for excellent protection

In the short term it cannot hurt to have virus protection. Win 10 is still pretty new so I would be willing to wait a bit before you ditch your anti virus software.

Sorry, but I simply can't agree with your friend. At best, Windows Defender and the other built-in Windows 10 antivirus protection is middling. Don't take my word for it, read the review of Windows 10 "Windows Defender Security Center" by PC Magazine. Here's the lead-in: "With the advent of Windows 10 Creators Update, the venerable Windows Defender has also received an update, as well as a promotion. It's now Windows Defender Security Center, because in addition to providing protection against malware, it helps manage other security features in Windows. But don't hold a bonfire party to burn your old antivirus. Windows Defender is better than nothing, but doesn't outshine the best free antivirus utilities, and it certainly doesn't come close to the level of protection provided by the top paid antivirus tools."

Like most things in this world, you get what you pay for. I don't mind paying for a superior level of malware protection. Having said that, it also depends, at least to some degree, on how savvy the user is. Some people have no clue how their poor Internet habits put them at risk, and they need the best protection they can get. But even the most careful of us can still get into trouble. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the thoughts, no I have no plans of ditching my 3rd party virus protector, I did not even when my friend mentioned it, which she completely understands as at this stage it is your own personal preference. As she admitted to me she had her doubts until she did all the tests etc and saw it for her own eyes, and as she said not an easy task to convince their business clients of that fact. But as always time will tell. I was just interested in outside opinions, thanks again Bubby
