Holy Artificial Eyeballs, Batman!

Postby Paz_Pazzaz » Thu Mar 16, 2017 9:47 am

Yesterday my "cataracted" lens in my right eye was removed and replaced by a multi focal length IOL. (Intra occular lens). I had NO idea I was living in such a dingy, amber-yellowed world. Right now, about 9:45 my time, my pupil is still over 1/4 inch in diameter, but already I can read the digital clock on a microwave that is across the room. That feat would have required glasses yesterday. I have wide glare around all specular highlights but expect that to diminish over time.

still a little scared, VERY excited,

Paz

So far, very good. I am absolutely THRILLED that I can now see AND focus my camera through the viewfinder with my new eye. I've been struggling with both for quite a while now, to the point that I've seriously considered giving up photography. Lately I'd say 90% of my video have been out of focus when I had to manually focus. Even when I had short blips that were focused correctly, I'd fiddle with focus again because what turned out to be in focus on my computer screen did not look like it was in focus when looking with my camera. I've used various power loupes on my flip out screen, a separate 5x7 field monitor with the image enlarged up to 6X. I've purchased and created several eye shields to block sunlight so I could see the view screen and/or viewfinder better. None of it worked well enough to be able to call it successful. But now... the new eye is fabulous!!!

But, as my surgeon guessed, I'm not as happy with my near vision as I had hoped, but as the swelling subsides, that may improve. I have not been tested yet but I suspect my far vision in the new eye falls short of 20/20. The doctor said I may want to try a different lens next time to get better distance vision. I'll post again after my next appointment. (Oh, close vision isn't bad - just not great. I was able to read instructions on a bag of fire ant poison today using only the new eye. They make all that stuff really tiny. With both eyes, I can still see very near very well and focus at about 8 inches. I've always been nearsighted. My world has been in focus for about 4 feet. Now the new eye is better from about 16" out. And I'm finding myself doing compulsively cleaning everything in sight. Mopped my kitchen floor at 10 PM the other night! :fg:

Thanks again, everyone!

Thanks for that update Paz. When I had my cataract surgery, I opted for mono-vision lenses as multi focal length IOL were too new and the insurance didn't cover them anyway. Right eye for distance, left eye for reading. So far I am very happy. But, one downside is loss of perceived 3D vision for distance. And no 3D for movies either. I had used this mono-vision system with external contact lenses for 40 years prior to the operation so I was pretty used to it.

Speedy recovery Paz! My husband had both eyes done recently and the thing that impressed him most was the yellow tint was gone. The insurance didn't cover the lens for reading closeup, but his vision is near perfect for faraway now.
