Custom movie menu template in PRE 15

Postby TennisKaty040 » Sat Jan 14, 2017 4:33 pm

I just installed PRE Version 15 and have the new Muvipix Guide to Photoshop and Elements 15. I made a DVD template for PRE 11 which no longer works. Thought I could make a new one following the instructions in the new book, but when I look at the templates in 15.0/ONLINE/DVD TEMPLATES.... they are all .png files, not .psd so I can't edit them in Photoshop. Also file naming convention seems to have changed, starting with a language as "en-US", and with "prv" inserted before "mm". Can I still make my own template???

The PNG files you are looking at are not the Movie Menu files. They are previews. As the book indicates, the Movie Menu files are actually PSD files -- but they don't appear in the folders until you actually use or download a template. That's why you're only seeing PNG files in the folders you're looking into.

Select and apply the Movie Menu template you want to modify. The program will take about 30 seconds to a minute to download and install it. After that you will be able to copy it make your own template or modify the PSD file.

And do heed my warning in the book to include a Downloaded.TXT file in the folder along with any new templates you create! Otherwise the program will erase your file the first time you try to apply it.

I'm still having trouble making my custom movie menu template. I think I am following the steps in the book, but I must be missing something. I created a new folder in C:/Program Data.... DVD Templates/All Lang. I made it under Travel and called it "Kays Trips". I copied 6 psd files to my new folder and renamed them. (also a Downloaded.txt file) I changed the background in the file named Kays_pal_w_mm.psd. In PRE15, when I select a movie menu theme, there is a blank box labeled Kays Trips with a little grey circle dithering in it. If I click on the box, the program crashes. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere Elements 15, but that didn't help.

Hard to say without actually seeing the file or knowing every step you took, Katy.

Can you post a screen capture of what you see in the Movie Menu Adjustments when you apply your new menu template?

I don't get as far as the Movie Menu Adjustments screen, my new file doesn't load at all. When I click on the box that should bring up the menu the program stops responding.

Clearly something is wrong somewhere. But I'd have to dive into the PSD files themselves maybe to see.

Could it be because there are no PNG files for the preview?

I copied the Outdoor Wedding files, made no changes, and added them to a new folder called "Chuck Wedding". If I remove everything except the PSD files and the Downloaded.txt files I have the same problem as Katy. The template does not preview and even it a cancel the program crashes. Nothing worked until I added the PNG files (US version) back to the folder, then everything was fine. I also have a DVD Templates folder in "Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Premiere Elements 15 > DVD Templates > Common" There I have one folder with a Slideshows folder and a pan and zoom folder inside. That also shows up in my available template selections and also includes PNG files in the folder.

Interesting. It didn't used to be like that.

Thanks for the research, Chuck! I'll look into it more myself when I have the time.

Putting the .png files in did make it possible to load my custom template, but background and minor title change I made to the _pal_ww_w_mm.psd file does not show up when I load the new template, so I will have to work some more on this later. I suspect there may be Windows 10 issues. Many thanks Steve and Chuck for your helpful suggestions.

I would think that the .png files placed in the same folder with the newly created (or modified) .psd Template file must correspond in name and also include an image of the new Template. For example, let's take a look at the Pan and Zoom Template subfolder in the Slideshow folder and focus on the English language files with the "en" prefix. As you can see the "pan and zoom_hd-mm" and the "pan and zoom_hd_sm" have a corresponding "en_US_pan and zoom_pal_s_mmpng_prv_mm" and the "en_US_pan and zoom_pal_s_smpng_prv_sm. These seem to be the small .png preview images that correspond to an image of the Pan and Zoom Template. If you click on any of these .png files to open them to view, you will see that they are small images (thumbnails) of the Main Menu (mm) and the Scene Selection (sm) Templates. So I am guessing that you may have to create new .png files that correspond to the changes that you made in the modified Template and put those in the same folder with the new Template and with a file name that corresponds to the new Template. Be sure to retain the same file naming structure as the original.
