Suggestions please:
I recorded an evening of very competent musicians taking turns in an 'open mike' night. The footage is a series of complete numbers about 4 mins long.
The easiest would be to just string them all together with a few choice transitions but it would be too long and quite boring.
I would prefer to make a montage of the evening with perhaps some interesting but subtle transitions etc. I'm not sure the best way to edit/cut clips and use the sound track etc. I just want to end up with a flavour of the evening. Do I use clips from the middle of numbers - the end of numbers? The footage stays mainly on the lead vocalists with slow zoom out to include the whole band plus zooms in on the lead guitar breaks and percussion etc. Music style was mainly 60s rock/pop
Any suggestions or links to good example projects would be appreciated.

Do you have any b-roll of the audience? If not, maybe some stills or other video of something relating to the song.

I like where Peru is heading. If you just cut from one segment to another to make a straight highlight reel, you risk ending up with something that resembles an old K-tel ad. If you have some crowd shots or stills, great. If not, grab some frames from the video and use them as stills. I'd use a longer stretch of audio from each number to maintain continuity and overlay stills interspersed with video to give it a good mix. If you want, you can display multiple stills at the same time kind of like a picture in picture and fade them in and out at different times to keep it interesting. For the first try, I think I would start the first segment with the opening number and/or intro and follow with segments from the middle of the other numbers and finish with the end of the last number. Cross dissolve or fade transition between the segments. Tweak until it feels right.
Most of all, have fun playing with it.

I too agree, I would also profit from some shots of the surrounding or some nice details from the interiors. I recently recorded a presentation of a book of poems, and I ... b-rolled with some pictures made by the author of the book, some wall paints from the theatre, the dome, the bookrest, the microphones... to cover some shaky camera movements ... .

Along those lines: You may want to play with having your frame grabs "become video" or vice versa.
