After Effects + Photo group

Postby momoffduty » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:01 pm

I created a group on Vimeo: After Effects + Photo
Just starting out there are about 40 videos. I've added some from my Likes over the past few years and from my contacts. Members have added too. Vimeo has many AE groups which is a broad spectrum, this group is dedicated to photos.

An eclectic mix of videos. If you have time check out some amazing work from AE users. :-D

Just wanted to bump this thread. In one year there are now 250+ videos & members from all editing backgrounds/countries. The theme of the group is using photos in After Effects projects from promos to intros or slideshows. Lots of inspiration.

Man, alive... every one of those scenes must've taken hours and hours to prep. What a great job. It really brings those old photos to life.

That Bedford vid is incredible. Do each one of those objects, groups and individuals have to be cut out in Photoshop to do the 2-D effects, or is there an easier way to do this? And how do they do 3-D motion, such as at 2:25 at Green's Drug Store? Can the basics be described in a few sentences? What impresses me the most is not necessarily the technical expertise so much as the artistic inventiveness. So well done.

Dave, everything is cut out in Photoshop first and placed on its own layer. The layers are placed into a 3D space. Think of of a diorama box from school days. A virtual camera floats through the scene. The tricky part is the placement and not to have the objects themselves appearing to float...such as floating feet would spoil the effect. And you do not want the background to be placed too far in the back or the effect will not look real in perspective.

No, there is no easy way. But, that is the joy in creating something like this...like a good painting or sculpting or woodworking. Cutting things out correctly is key.

Richard Harrington is an AE guru among many other editing software and has written books & tuts.

Thanks Cheryl. The diorama is an excellent analogy. But I'm trying to figure out how he swung around to show both sides of the drug store sign, as if it had been taken from actual video. The only thing I can think of would be if he recreated a replica of the sign in 3-D space. This is so far removed from anything that I've done.

And not only that, you have to go into Photoshop and "create" all the stuff that would be behind the items that you cut out, using the clone tool or something similar.

That's what impressed me so much. I did one 10-second photo "fly through" of my own using a still photo, and just the Photoshop work of cutting things out and replacing things took hours. He must've spent an incredible amount of time on each of those scenes.

But Dave raises a good question: both sides of the drug store. Is that just the original photo reversed or what?

The outside of the drug store is 3 files placed in a "V" shape. If you had say 4 square shapes, you could place those in a box shape with their sides touching. In the drug store photo, there are 3 sides. One centered & two at angles to appear like a corner building. I am not sure if the drug store side is reversed, but could be and cloned in the bricks.

Yes, lots of cloning. I am guessing that some of the scenes in the video were created from several photos and not just one photo cut out & cloned. As long they all have the same tone it appears they came from the same photo. Inside the drug store there is a lady at a desk. This could have been from a different photo and the same for the people. A lot of the photos are black & white. You could add a sepia tone to several photos and they would appear to be from one scene.
