On switching to Premiere 2013

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 10.

On switching to Premiere 2013

Postby maryfs » Thu Feb 12, 2015 12:49 pm

Second question today - I am thinking of going to Pre2013 from PRE 2010. (Good sale ends tomorrow). I have a couple of projects barely begun in 2010. I understand that it is not good practice to start a project in one version and try to switch to another partway through (Pg. 28 in your Muvipix Premiere Elements 10 guide).

(a) So can I import JUST the .avi raw footage clips from those projects into 2013 – and not have them jumble their order? Or should I just re-import straight from the MiniDV tape again into 2013?

(b) And is there any way of downloading just the footage from a Mini-DV tape for archiving in the .avi format OTHER THAN through Adobe Premiere?

Thanks for any help you can offer. The time is nigh to move forward on this project.

Hi Mary,

(a) - Yes, you can use the .avi in any version of Premiere Elements, just import the files from a folder to the media panel.

(b) - Yes, WinDV is a program made to simply and easily capture MiniDV tape via Firewire. It is quite easy to use and very handy, I use it rather than Premiere Elements to capture tapes http://windv.mourek.cz/

There is also the capture utility for HD video, HDVSplit. If you have High Definition video on MiniDV tape.

Also note that, if when you say Premiere 2013 you mean Premiere Elements 13, that version 13 of Premiere Elements does not even INCLUDE software for capturing miniDV footage -- so you will have no choice to but to use a third-party program like WinDV.

...or don't uninstall Pre El 10 and use it for capturing only.

Good ideas. I will let you know what I end up doing. I have forbidden myself from investing in a newer video camera until I really get started with editing all my old DV tapes. But it might be time to let my trusty old Canon XL-2 go! Thanks very much for the quick replies.

Re: Using WinDV

Postby maryfs » Mon Feb 16, 2015 11:07 am

Success with transferring miniDV tape using the WinDV software - great little program. Two questions came up during the first hour of tape -
First, when the transfer seemed to be going fine, I left it for an hour and found I had only 6 1/2 GB of footage in my folder rather than the 13 I expected after a full hour of tape. I found the point where the transfer had stopped and sure enough - it was at minute 31. The computer goes into some kind of hibernation mode when I am not actively using the screen - could that be the reason the transfer ended early? Or is there some maximum amount - like half an hour - that the WinDV program can transfer without being tended to? It would be nice to just let it work on its own for an hour at a time since I have 400+ hours of tape to archive! (I set it up to Capture again from minute 31 but kept the mouse moving every couple of minutes until it was finished - so I did get the full hour transferred.)

Second, the numbering that WinDV adds to each clip is sort of cumbersome - and I am always paranoid about clips getting out of order when they are moved around (this seems to be what happened in the past). Can I "rename" the clips after they are on the hard drive so that I have simple sequential numbers after the title and the date of the tape (which WinDV extracts - so cool!)?

Here is an example. The label the clip is given by WinDV is '1999_ZimBots_1.99-08-11_06-41.0000'. The title of my file is 1999_ZimBots_1. The date I took it was on August 11, 1999. So all of that I would leave as is. But I would like to replace the end numbering (which seems to have no rhyme or reason) - on this clip it's 06-41.0000 - with (1). If I select all clips on a particular date, Windows will then number each sequential clip with (2), (3), etc. I like that a lot better. Any reason not to make this change?

Assuming you're not capturing to a FAT32 drive, there are no file size limitations to how large a video file you can capture. But, yes absolutely, your computer going to sleep would definitely interrupt your capture!

As for renaming your files, of course you can. But I'm not aware of a program that does a mass-renaming.

You have some control over the naming convention in WinDV. Click on the Config button (1), then set the naming parameters (2).
