Transferriing from one HD to another

Postby maryfs » Thu Feb 12, 2015 12:46 pm

I have a large collection of Mini-DV tapes. My main computer no longer has a Firewire connection. So my guru built me a small, slower computer with a firewire connection so that I can at least download these tapes. I use a copy of my Premiere Elements 2010 on each computer – the two copies allowed with my license. So if I set up a folder for a project and download the footage to that folder through Premiere using my small computer, I get a bunch of .avi clips and a few extra folders which Premiere sets up for itself – all within my master folder for the project. All fine and dandy, thanks to you guys back in 2012.

What I want to make sure of is this – IF I COPY AND PASTE THIS MASTER FOLDER FROM THE SMALL IMPORT COMPUTER INTO MY LARGE DESKTOP COMPUTER, CAN I THEN OPEN THAT FILE WITH Premiere on my LARGE computer (assuming I show Premiere where it is filed)? And will that folder’s contents be ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL – INCLUDING ALL THE .avi CLIPS IN THE SAME ORDER AS THEY DOWNLOADED FROM THE TAPE - to those that were set up on the small computer?

I need to get to actually editing my tapes – but this first step of downloading from tape and transferring either to my big computer OR to hard drives for archival storage until I get around to editing – has me stymied! It seems not to work for me reliably every time.

Hi Mary,

Inside that master folder should be a ".prel" file with the project name before the "."

If you copy the entire folder over to the other computer and open Premiere Elements you will be able to tell it that you want to open the project by pointing to that project file. Hopefully I've explained this clear enough, if not just ask more questions :)

Maybe capture just a few clips and then transfer the project folder over to the other computer and give it a try. One thing that you might want to do is to create a new/separate folder for each project, that way you can keep all of the project files and clips separate.

Thanks, Chuck. I think I understand and will give it a try - be back with questions if there still are any. Much appreciated. You guys are just great!
