Lots of discussion brewing on this awesome consumer video editing software. Would love to hear from experienced users.

Someone on the Avid Studio user forum posted this link to a video review of Avid Studio. I find it quite informative, so I thought I post it here. Towards the end he compares render speeds of Avid Studio and Sony Vegas Movie Studio and Vegas Pro 10 64bit with CUDA enabled.

I haven't checked it out yet (I note it is 15mins long) but I see it was posted April 15th, 2011. The CUDA enabled Vegas Pro is version 11 (not 10) and it only came out a month or so back.

Paul I might be wrong about the 64-bit CUDA enabled Vegas Pro version, but that is what it said in the video.

Yes, he has it wrong, version 10 is not CUDA enabled.
Makes me concerned about the accuracy of the whole content of the video if he doesn't realise that the version he was using is infact not CUDA enabled.

Vegas 10 was CUDA enabled - but only for very limited circumstances. For example the MP4 export from the Main Concept codec was not accelerated but the Sony AVC was - so it would depend what he used. By all accounts the V11 is much improved - and supports Radeon Cards as well. However I understand that neither are anywhere near the performance of CS5....
Having said that Avid studio is 20-25% of the price of Vegas Pro.

Ah yes, I take it back. Vegas 10 was CUDA enabled... I forgot because as you say it gave virtually no acceleration... and it was only enabled for the Sony AVC export. A year or so back I did a comparision on the Vegas forum comparing GPU acceleration with Sony Vegas Pro 10 and PPro CS5... and as you say Vegas did not compare with PPro. Vegas Pro 11 is much improved and gives both rendering and timeline playback acceleration.

I find the review quite informative for anyone who is looking for additional video editing options. I really like the program. It runs way better than PE9 on my computer (I have not really given PE10 a workout yet), it is very stable - I had no crashes so far and render times are acceptable. Not to mention the Red Giant plugins and other additional content. It has a learning curve, like all the other video editors too. I took the Class on Demand lessons which helped a lot.

The free Red Giant plugins and other additional content is an incredible offer... if you add up the cost of those plugins it must come to a couple of thousand dollars.

I think that's just about the value Avid placed on those plugins in their advertisements I saw back in February 2011.
