Distorted Video Clips when added into Vegas

Postby Mel717 » Tue Mar 06, 2018 5:06 pm

Hey guys! I’ve been running into an issue with video editing the last few months.. I’ve decided not to waste anymore time and bring it to you guys for advice. I put together documentaries or day in the Life videos for clients.. we collect video files, news clips and whatever else the client gives us to add in where needed. When I play these files on my computer, they play fine, when I add them into Vegas, they become distorted, sometimes it’s distorted audio and sometimes it’s video (discoloration and slanted lines).. Vegas obviously doesn’t like something about the files, however it doesn’t happen on all of them so I can’t figure out what it is. I’ve tried collecting a screen shot of the vid playing correctly outside of Vegas and it doesn’t make a difference. The videos are usually poor quality so I imagine that has something to do with it..
Has anyone encountered this problem? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

My first thought is that you are mixing different file formats and Vegas is having an issue with the different formats. You also might be missing a driver for the file you are trying to play.

If you can check the file extensions of the clips you have and confirm.

If they all are different file types you might need to convert them to a common file type using handbrake. Someone else might be able to give you a more detailed insight.

Thanks Sid! That’s the feeling I get too, I’m just not sure what to look for.. it says they are mp4 files.. 29.99 rates per sec..
I’m curious about trying out handbrake though just to see if it would package it better for Vegas.

Might be a good idea to open one of these videos in MediaInfo (a free download). Set MediaInfo's View menu to Text and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum.

It could be a Pixel Aspect Ratio thing, in which case the fix is as simple as right-clicking and selecting the option to Interpret Footage.

Ok, here is one example. In this case the audio is fine, the video is distorted.

Thank you so much for any input!!!

It seems like I’m running into this problem with every project these days.. and I’m using Vegas 15 btw ;)

You've got a couple of issues going on that could be causing your problems. Namely that your video uses a non-standard video resolution (1146x634) and that it uses a variable frame rate, which give video editors fits.

I'd recommend you run the video through the free converter HandBrake. Set it up to produce a 1920x1080 video from Constant Frame Rate and 30 frames per second.

1146x634 won't create a perfect 1920x1080, which is why you're seeing some distortion. So set HandBrake to do some letterboxing -- adding some black above and below your video so that it can be 1920 pixels wide.

Thank You Steve! I’ve been playing around with Handbrake and haven’t been able to get a good copy together yet.. I found the place to check constant frame rate but can’t seem to get it to let me add in the 1920 x 1080 dimensions..
