"We will maintain and continue the Vegas brand."

Can you explain those two comments about branding in the same interview?

Two "brands" involved here: Sony & Vegas.
To me, it sounds like they're rebranding the Sony part, but keeping the Vegas part.

I'm a bit nervous about this, to be honest. There's a particular feature in Vegas that I have not been able to find by any other name in any other video editing software, and I hope they don't trash it:

Frame resampling.

This is the feature that, when you right-click a clip in your timeline and click on "Switches", gives you the option to set "Smart Resampling", "Force Resampling", or "Disable Resampling".
Primarily used for blending frame rates in a single timeline, I've been able to work that feature for other uses - such as using high frame rate clips (up to 240fps), and speeding them up tremendously. When resampling is on, it blends the frames to create a kind of faux motion blur. The more frames you can shoot with, the smoother the blur. This is really awesome for when you want to create a 180º shutter effect with timelapse. It creates a realistic motion blur to get a real sense of speed and eliminates the "stop motion" jutter effect that is usually associated with doing timelapses.

Here's a comparison video I created about 2 years ago. The split-screen shows a comparison of with and without motion blur using the resampling feature of Vegas. This demonstration shows how I like to create a 180º shutter effect using this feature.

Does anyone know if this feature exists in another editor like Adobe Premiere, and if so, what it's called?

Theoretically, another way to accomplish this effect without having to shoot a very high frame rate would be to shoot at whatever frame rate you want, but to set the shutter speed to be the same length of each frame.
For example, if you shoot at 30fps, shoot 1/30th sec shutter. The blur will extend the full duration of the frame, meeting up flush with the blur in the adjacent frames. When sped up using the method explained in the above video, the blur should be uniform when the frames are blended and should be acceptable.
The high frame rate technique is useful on cameras that not only shoot high frame rates, but also where you don't have control of the shutter speed, such as the GoPro I used, which at the time didn't have shutter speed controls.
I need to test that theory out.

Kent, nice to see you seem to agree about "rebranding".

But don't you think your Premiere question might go unnoticed in this thread?

Well, it's related to Vegas since the only place I can find the feature is in Vegas. I'm just hoping I can find it in another editor if Vegas changes beyond recognition.

Kent,

I received an email today from revisionfx about their ReelSmart Motion Blur plug-in, available for various editors.
This does something, but I haven't had time to play with it a lot or look at the tutorials. The demo version puts a red x across the whole frame. I hate it when they do that.

Thought you might like to take a look at it anyway.

This means that at the end of September 2016, you can look forward to the most advanced version of VEGAS Pro yet!
Here's a sneak peek of some of the highlights and new features in the upcoming version:

» HEVC/H.265 support
» 4K Smart Upscaling
» Native ProRes support
» and much more!

Stay tuned for more updates and get ready for the all new VEGAS Pro 14.

I'm really looking forward to that H.265 support, and I hope it takes off more than it has thus far industry-wide. If I'm not mistaken, aside from the ability to handle 4K in a reasonable manner, it means yet further HHD space saved with little-to-no drop in quality for already-existing SD/HD footage.

One of the big stumbling blocks to adoption has been the Patent licensing fees. H.265 is considerably more expensive than H.264. Consequently, a lot of companies are looking towards VP9 as an alternative. Expect a lot of VP9 hardware support next year.

As some/many of the Vegas forum followers here are only using versions of (Vegas) Movie Studio Platinum, they might be interested in the following info as well, which was recently emailed to (not all) users.

"Movie Studio is entering into a brand new era!
Since the acquisition of Movie Studio and other tools from Sony Creative Software, our entire development team in Madison, Wisconsin is working tirelessly to take video editing to the next level.
This means that at the end of February 2017, you can look forward to the most advanced Movie Studio yet. The new version will come with exciting new features and a new name: VEGAS Movie Studio.

Here's a sneak peek of some of the highlights in the upcoming version:

» New video effects
» Multi-cam editing
» Travel route animation
» and much more

Stay tuned for more updates and get ready for the all new VEGAS Movie Studio 14!
