How to put 3 iPhone videos side by side in one frame

Postby jonnyD » Tue Apr 07, 2015 1:00 am

I have 3 separate iPhone video clips. Their frame sizes are: 406x720 360x360 and 406x720 respectively. I would like them to play concurrently side-by-side in a 1280x720 sized frame (16:9 aspect ratio for possible upload to YouTube). I see the combined widths (1172) are a bit shy of the 1280 total frame width but I don't mind a little pillar boxing. How do I do it?
PS - when I play my clips with a a regular media player (I use VLC) the 360x360 clip fills the vertical dimension, I just lose a bit of detail since the resolution is not as good. So it appears all 3 clips will fill the 720 height of the frame.

Set up your Vegas/Movie Studio project for 1280x720 and import your videos, then just stack your videos, one above another, on three separate tracks on your timeline. Then use the Pan/Crop tool to position each in your video frame.

Since your second video is only 360x360, you're either going to have to accept that it's only 3/4 as wide as the other two, so you'll either leave it like that or cheat it a bit by forcing some enlargement on it.

One thing I'm not sure of, though: Traditionally, when you list photo or video dimensions, you list the width and then the height -- as in 1280x720. But I'm not sure if you've done that with your dimensions, so I'm not sure if you're talking about, for instance, a video that's 406 px wide and 720 px tall or vice versa.

But either way, you can arrange them in your video frame by placing each video on a separate video track (one above another) and then using the Pan/Crop tool to size and position each video within that frame.

Steve, I'm pretty sure he meant 460wx720h and taken with the cellphone held in portrait orientation.

No, I had the dimensions correct. See screen shots below. The iPhone video is 406wide x 720high. That's why I wanted to do a split screen - because the videos are so narrow. I did play around some after sending the first post and found the solution as you mentioned: stacking the videos on 3 separate tracks and positioning with the pan/crop tool. I've also read that the Track Motion tool may come in handy with this type of effect but I haven't played with that yet. :-D

... then you can use 'Track motion' for every track to position the screen area you have cropped:

It is well explained from 1:45, you can do it manually or using parameters.
