Image Stabilizing with SONY Stabiliser

Postby MrGrunthunter » Wed Feb 04, 2015 3:42 pm

Is there a file size limit that the SONY STABILIZE tool can work with?

I used it once on a very short video and it worked great but now I've been trying to use it on another set of videos recorded while riding an ATV, I have 9 files and they are large (1.2 to 3.9gb). I tried doing them all at once and SMS crashed and then I tried a 3.9gb file and it crashed and then I dropped down to 2.3 and then 1.2gb files and it still crashed.

That's a good question.

I've never tried to use it on a file as large as 5 to 20 minutes, so I don't know.

Though, in most of these cases, it's not the program or plug-in that has the limitation. It's that it requires more power/disc space/RAM/virtual memory/whatever than your computer is capable of providing.

Have you tried other stabilizers to see if the limitation is unique to the default Sony plugin?

I've been trying to use VirtualDub with the DeShaker Plug-In but am still having trouble getting it to work. For some reason it won't recognize the DeShaker Plug-In. Maybe I'm downloading, extracting the zipped files wrong. When I download it I see it on my Download folder. When I extract the files it puts all the files into another folder in my Download folder titled VirtualDub. I extract the Deshaker file and place it into the Plugin32 folder in VirtualDub like all the youtube tutorials say to do but it's just not showing up. I don't know of any others to try.

Might be worth it to simply render the clip in small chunks. The problem there would be that if the shot is continuous throughout, then it might make for a bit of a jarring effect when going from the first chunk to the next during playback after rendering and reassembling. The reason is that the stabilizer might try to process the stabilization differently for each clip than it would for 1 single one.

VirtualDub and DeShaker both come in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. They need to match -- 32-bit with 32-bit for example. The DeShaker zip file contains one file, "deshaker.vdf". Extract that file and place it in VirtualDub's plugin folder. The next time you start VirtualDub, DeShaker should show up in the add filters dialog panel and be available for use.
