Specific Media Generator

Postby Doc K » Wed Jul 09, 2014 2:53 pm

I am trying to wrap my brain around parenting and compositing and masking
(from Steve's book The Muvipix.com guide to Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11)
and I find that the media generator he is using on page 116 isn't included with my Vegas software. Can I get that specific MG somewhere else.

The Generated Media that I used for the white dot for my mask was created using the Color Gradient. I just modified it by making the #2 color transparency (by selecting #2 point and dragging the opacity slider, left of the RGB sliders, down to zero) and then dragging the #1 and #2 closer to each other to create a sharper edge between them.

As for compositing video layers, it may be something you never use. In very basic terms, compositing is just combining two layers so that they behave as one. In the book I demonstrate how transparency on a composited set of tracks affects the visibility of the tracks below it.

In all honesty, it's a pretty high-level concept, and I can't even think of a real-life situation in which I've actually used the feature. So I wouldn't sweat worrying about it if it eludes you. Unless you've got a specific need for it.

Does that help?

That's our family at the Grand Canyon, and my middle daughter who likes to question my irreproachable authority.

But the way I achieved this effect is:

I put a cookie cutter on the top track,
my daughter on the second track, which I made a child of the top track,
and the grand canyon footage on the bottom.

But I'll try your way too.

Thanks

PS Is there a good reason why I would want to upgrade to Movie Studio 13 from 11?

Nice job, Doc! As we always say -- it doesn't matter how you did it as long as the results speak for themselves!

As for upgrading, it all depends on how compelling the new features are to you.

Here's the link to our promo page for the Movie Studio 13 book. Click on the "What's New in the Latest Release" link to see my notes on the new features.
