You guys are really warming my heart with your enthusiasm.

Meantime, can I ask a question that may affect how I proceed with these books?

The book costs $26.95. That's a lot for a book about a $49 program. But that's what I need to sell it for to make up for the added production costs of producing it in color.

If it were black & white, I could probably sell the book for under $20.

Do you think the beauty and increased readability justifies charging nearly 40% more?

Or do you think I'm hurting my potential market by selling a companion piece for an economical program at a premium price?

What would it have been if in black and white Steve, $24.95? I think that's what I gave for the PrEl 7 book wasn't it? Now I haven't seen it yet, but if you had asked up front if it would have been worth an extra couple of bucks to have the illustrations in color, I probably would have said yes. For me it's not about the price of the book vs the price of the program. I think I actually paid less for the program than for the book. It's about the perceived value of having what I know will be a well written reference, and the added bonus of direct access to the author if there's something that's not making sense, or missing. I've paid a lot more and received a lot less. And I'm not blowing smoke; it's the truth.

That's very helpful, Dave.

The price for the book in black & white would have been around $19.95. Maybe less.

Okay, I went back and checked. I did pay $24.95 for the Muvipix Guide To Adobe Premiere Elements 7. I thought it would have been somewhat overpriced if it had been published and sold in quantities of hundreds of thousands, but I know it wasn't. If I had thought that I got took, I wouldn't have turned around and purchased this new one at even more money. I know almost exactly what I'll be getting. I think most of us are willing to pay a little more for quality - not the quality of the paperback book, but the quality of content.

Even when done by a high quality print shop, black and white tends to be muddy and difficult to read. Both the "In a Flash" and PrEl 7 books would have benefited from the increased legibility of color illustrations. I much prefer color with its increased readability and am willing to pay a reasonable amount more to get it. That's probably not the case for everyone. However, I think you are in the right ballpark pricewise.

Thank you for the feedback, guys. You're my "market research".

We'll make an effort to publish our future books in color then!

Hi Steve,

I have been gone for several days and just saw this thread.

My comment is actually about the Premiere Elements 7 book. To me the weak point of that book is the black and white screen images that are not very crisp. I realized that cost was probably the significant factor in your decisions, so I never made a big deal of it . However since you raised the subject, I decided to add my comments to demonstrate its importance. Concerning the cost - I would definitely have paid more for the book to have color screen images - glad to see that you will try to use color in the future.

Steve, the problem with comparing your books to the software they elucidate is that the comparison makes your books appear OVERPRICED when IMHO the truth is that the software you are elucidating may be UNDERPRICED.

Consider, for example, the PSE/PRE7 bundle. I for one am amazed that Adobe is willing to make available to us such powerful software at such a reasonable price. If your book on PRE 7 would have cost, say, $30-$40 to publish in color, it would still, in my case, have been a bargain because of all the "pearls" that it contains.*

*Some might argue that the Appendix alone, which describes how to maintain one's machine for video editing, is worth AT LEAST $30-40.

Steve, I agree with previous statements. I much prefer my illustrations to be in color. I believe they are easier to read and see the pictures. And well........... I think color makes a book seem more professional. Just MHO. :-D

I didn't Clayton. I was just being facetiously childish. That's the reason for the LAMER smiley. Congrats on the arrival! I look forward to gettting mine soon.
