Imported Clip has "lost" its Audio

Postby boogieted » Sun Apr 14, 2013 10:10 am

I'm using PE9 for Mac. I have imported an .mts clip into a new project but it doesn't have any audio at all. When I play this clip in a player like VLC, the sound is fine. The clip is supposed to have 5.1 audio, but it has no audio in PE9 at all. I have used .mts files in PE9 before with no problem. So I'm wondering if I need to try to convert this .mts file to another format using a 3rd party converter, or if my project settings are the problem. The .mts clip is 1280X720, 59.xx fps, 5.1 audio. It was captured from a DVR recording with a Hauppauge capture device and HDPVR software. I welcome any solutions/suggestions.
Thanks!

What model of camcorder did this video come from, Ted?

Is your project set up for 5.1 audio? (Look under Edit/Project Settings.) In older versions of the program, exact project setup was vital. (Version 11 does this automatically.)

Assuming this is from an AVCHD camcorder, start a new project, ensure that you've selected the correct project preset for AVCHD 5.1 audio -- then important the clip into it and see if it makes a difference.

Steve, thanks for the reply. This recording came from a satellite DVR, captured with a converter box. Attached here are screen shots of project presets and settings. Also, (and not sure if this matters) the clip I'm trying to import is actually an .m2ts file, not a .mts file. That's a correction to my original post. Thanks.

I have no experience working with DVR video.

What specs are listed when you open this video in a program like G Spot or Media Info?

Steve, don't let the mention of DVR confuse you. He's not trying to use footage that's in the internal format used by the DVR. The Hauppauge is a capture device which captures the signals from the audio and video component outputs of the source device and outputs standard avchd video files -- in this case, they are m2ts files. It's these AVCHD video files he's trying to edit.

Boogietied, like Steve, I would like to see what MediaInfo has to say about this file. You can get it free here: http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

Thanks for suggesting MediaInfo. Pasted below is the information. It appears that the audio is NOT 5.1, but rather 2-channel stereo. However in this situation I'm suspecting that there's a problem with this particular clip that occurred during capture. This clip may be corrupt somehow. I may have to re-capture it from my DVR or convert it to another format perhaps. Because it seems that no matter what type of project I set up in PE9 (I've tried a few different ones), the audio disappears from this .m2ts file once I import it to a project.

Does PRE9 on the MAC comform audio to an uncompressed format? How long would it take for 3 hours of audio to conform, and would the resulting file size be over a limit for that type of uncompressed format?
