buttons suddenly do not work

Postby AlanSilberlight » Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:41 am

This is strange. PRE 9 had been working fine. Now, when I launch the program and the New Project window comes up asking me to type in a name, indicate where it is being saved to and to change whatever settings I must, I cannot do any of these. I cannot type in a name and clicking on the buttons does nothing.

I tried a workaround but it did not work. I opened a project that I had created a few months ago and tried to modify that. The window that indicated that I had to change settings because of the new video clip came up. When I tried to click the button to agree to the setting change, it did not work.

Has anyone seen this before?
Thank you very much.

How much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is on your C drive?

Have you tried launching the program while holding down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys on the left side of your keyboard?

Thank you for responding so quickly. There is 19.2 gb of space remaining. I tried control+alt+shift but had no success. I'm sure I do need to do a disk defrag; I'll do one now and then report back.
Thanks again.

I did the defrag but with no success--when I hover the cursor over the buttons, the color shade changes as if everything is active but nothing happens when I click on the button...very strange..thank you again..do you think an unstall and re-install would help?

It could be that your system is starting to choke on its lack of free space. It sometimes happens to me when I get below 20 gigs free. (It would be more pronounced if you were also editing on your C drive rather than a second drive.)

Clear another 5-10 gigs of space and maybe run a Deep Care tune-up with a program like Advanced System Care Free (http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html) to clear out the dust bunnies and see if that makes a difference.

Otherwise, reinstalling could just leave more tmp files on your drive, which might only make things worse.

I cleared more space so I now have 59.6 GB free; I also ran Advanced System Care Free. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem. I'm assuming that I'll have to do an uninstall and reinstall. I can't think of anything else; this is perplexing.

Thank you again.

That's a new one Alan, would love to know if a re-install fixes the problem.
Can't imagine what might cause that to happen.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

I tried a re-install twice, the 2nd time with deleting my preferences--nothing has worked. This program worked a month ago, the last time I used it. There must be some sort of conflict.

Thank you again.

Are you running a Windows machine? I think it's time to restore the system back to a restore point date that you know everything was working correctly.

I would like to revisit this problem, two years later. Nothing has helped. However, by creating a new user account and installing the program I did get it to work. It uninstalled and then reinstalled. When I attempted to run the program with the regular user account it did not work. Same problem. By the way, around the same time the following was installed:
AMD Catalyst Install Manager
Cyberlink PowerDVD 12
Microsoft Visual C ++ 2008 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 Redistributable

Any ideas? Thank you.

Hello John,

Thank you very much. Here is the information. By the way, I tried to install the trial version of PE 12. Apparently it downloaded fine but it kept saying "extracting." When I clicked on the setup.exe file in the PE 12 folder, it said that it would not work on a 64 bit system. However, we know that PE should work on a 64 bit system. So..after a while I gave up trying to install the trial of the current version.

Dell Studio XPS 435T
Windows 7--64 bit
Intel i7
CPU X 980 @ 3.33 GHz 3.33 GHz
RAM 12.0 GB
64 bit
2 HDDs other than C
Free space: C--30.2GB D--585GB E--589GB
all drives 1.5 TB

Thanks again.

Did you extract the downloaded file by right-clicking on it and selecting the Extract option first -- or did you just try to launch the installation by browsing into the Zip file?

There was no zip file; the downloaded created a folder with various files. Thank you.

I'm not sure what's going on. You might want to try downloading it again. Version 12 should definitely load right onto your system.
